The idea first came to mind one night in July 1996 when Tuomas and his friends were partying around a campfire in the woods, and they wrote three songs and recorded them in December of that year. Initially, the band consisted of only three people: Tuomas, Tarja and Emppu. Later, it was felt that these songs needed to have drum sounds, so Jukka joined in. Emppu replaced the original box piano with an electric one, and Nightwish wrote some new songs, and they spent a week recording 7 pieces in April '97. In '97, the band signed a two-album contract with Spinefarm. In this way, they created 4 more compositions. Among them, Carpenter's song reached No. 8 on the Finnish singles chart. The band's debut album, AngelsFallFirst, was officially released in November '97 and received a good response from listeners, but the band soon ceased its activities. Emppu and Jukka are to serve in the military, while Tarja is to complete their studies. After negotiating with the company, the contract was extended and the number of albums was changed to three. In May '98, the company released a video of Carpenter and other songs for Nightwish. In the summer of the same year, bassist Sami Vanska joined the team. In August, Nightwish had a full crew and started a new job. After recording a video of the single, on December 7, the band's most successful album to date, Oceanborn, was released, and it reached number five on the album chart, with the single sacramentofwilderness successfully sitting at the top of the singles chart.

Nightwish began a nationwide tour, and by the spring of '99, Oceanborn had a successful overseas release. The band was very popular in Europe, especially in Germany, and all the works were well sold, and they started to participate in major music festivals and go on a European tour.

The lyrics of most of the band's songs are written by keyboardist Thomas. Written by Holopani, the voice of female lead singer Tarja has made Night Wish a global acclaim. Taya graduated from the Sibelius Conservatory in Finland and also studied classical singing in Germany.
