Chapter 099: Gao Gong Bingguo (I)
Early the next morning, Gao Pragmatic went to the Hanlin Academy to order Mao first according to the rules - the place where he really "went to work" was, of course, in the palace, but today the situation is different, Gao Gong and Shen Shixing have drawn up the detailed arrangements for the prince's feast and the Japanese lecture have been sent to the Hanlin Academy, and Gao Pragmatic, as the special official of the prince's study in the cabinet, also has to go to the Hanlin Academy to get this "class schedule", so as to know the tasks and time arrangements for his "work".
Under the extreme attention of Longqing, the prince's study in the pavilion was extremely grand, comparable to the emperor's schooling, and it was divided into two kinds: daily lectures and scripture feasts. The daily lecture is to learn ordinary knowledge, and the sutra banquet is a special chair for the emperor to teach the scriptures and historical records; Daily lectures are regular learning, and sutra feasts are irregular lectures.
Due to the young age of the crown prince, the Japanese lecture was particularly valued. Gao Gong was the master of Emperor Longqing's palace, and this experience was an important factor in his pilgrimage to Longqing, so under the instigation of Gao Shishi, he took on the affairs of arranging the prince's study without hesitation. Yesterday afternoon, after discussing with Shen Shixing, Gao Gong immediately wrote a book for the crown prince Zhu Yijun to preliminarily arrange a schedule of rest and daily lectures: every 3rd, 6th, and 9th of every month, and the rest of the days will be daily.
That is to say, three days out of ten days are rested, and the remaining seven days are preached. This arrangement fully took into account the actual situation that the prince was young and needed to learn, and put the daily lecture in a priority position over rest, which was unanimously approved by the emperor, concubines and courtiers. For the content of each day's daily lecture, Gao Gong specially played the "Eight Articles of the Daily Lecture Ceremony", and made quite detailed regulations on it. These eight contents are exactly what Gao Pragmatic got at the Hanlin Academy today:
1. Read "University" and "Shangshu" every day. Read the "University" ten times first, read the "Shangshu" ten times, and the lecturer will follow the lecturer. Finish, that is, retreat.
Second, after the lecture and reading, the prince went into the warm pavilion to rest, and read and discuss with the prince what he had just said, in order to review the old and learn the new. He also picked one or two things about the current affairs of the court and the ticket to check with the prince, and the prince read and watched with him, and the ministers retired to serve in the west wing. If the prince has any questions, he will summon the ministers to the front of the emperor and explain the things in this book one by one.
Third, after reading the book, the ministers and others led the orthography of the official to serve the prince into the word, if the prince wants to enter the warm pavilion to rest, the ministers still retreat to the west wing to serve. If the prince does not enter the warm pavilion, the ministers will lead the speaker to speak again at noon.
Fourth, at the beginning of the afternoon, I will talk about the "Tongjian" section. Talking about official affairs, the facts of the rise and fall of the previous generations are directly understood. After speaking, everyone retreated, and the prince returned to the palace.
5. After the daily lectures and readings of the officials, the prince and his companions will revisit for a while, and if the prince has doubts about the meaning of the book, he will ask the ministers and so on, and then explain it with popular sayings, so as to understand.
6. On the days of rest on the third, sixth and ninth days of each month, the lecture and reading are temporarily exempted, and the prince is still expected to be in the palace, and the prince will read the scriptures calmly and calmly, or read the font and the scriptures, and write a piece at will, regardless of the number and the work.
7. Every day at sunrise, the prince is invited to have breakfast, and after the end, he will go out to give a lecture and read. After lunch, return to the palace.
Eighth, find out the first examples, unless in the cold or heat, do not stop reading. In case of wind and rain on this day, the decree will be temporarily waived.
This can be said to be a simple "class schedule" of Zhu Yijun: you need to get up before dawn every day, and go to the Wenhua Hall after breakfast to listen to the lectures. The first class is a study of the Confucian classics "Daxue" and "Shangshu", which are first read and memorized in a traditional way, and then lectured by officials. During recess, he also had to consult a few pieces of music with the help of the prince and the eunuch to exercise his practical ability to deal with state affairs in the future—this was added by Gao Gong at the instigation of Gao Shipra, and there was almost no such precedent in previous dynasties and generations. That is, Emperor Longqing attaches great importance to his son, so he will approve such a system.
After all, the prince is still saving, and the emperor is in a good position, what do you want to see? But Gao Gong's reason is also handy: apply what you have learned, while reading, you can select a few pieces to compare and see, and see how the emperor and the cabinet deal with the world's major affairs, which will be beneficial in the future.
If it weren't for an emperor like Emperor Longqing, this article would definitely not have been passed, and Gao Gong, who proposed this system, was afraid that he would be deeply suspicious, but Longqing was Longqing after all, and he had enough trust in his eldest son Zhu Yijun and his teacher Gao Gong, and he didn't feel that this was taking away his power at all - well, he couldn't wait to fully delegate power to Gao Gong in the affairs of the outer court, and it didn't make much sense to say this.
But one thing that must be said is that although Gao Gong was selfless when he proposed this system, in fact, Gao Pragmatic was obviously selfish when he gave him this suggestion - only the prince can see the chapter, and he, the prince's companion, has the opportunity to quietly instill some "useful" thoughts in him at some times, and even in extreme cases, he can also use the prince to say something that is useless or inconvenient to say.
So in this matter, Gao Gong is out of public intentions, but Gao Pragmatic is honest and selfish. However, he didn't blame himself in his heart, because his defense to himself was also very clear: Isn't what I did all this to save Da Ming in the final analysis? I don't intend to use the crown prince to embezzle and take bribes.
The second class is the orthography class, in which the prince needs to write a number of pieces neatly, and the orthography officer will guide him and accept their pertinent advice. The next third lesson is mainly to selectively explain the "Zizhi Tongjian", by exploring the laws of the rise and fall of the past dynasties, and drawing on the experience of imperial rule.
After the three classes, it was already noon, and after lunch, the prince returned to the palace, and the day's lectures ended. In addition, it is a rest day, that is, a day when the lecture is not spoken, the prince still needs to review the scriptures or learn the characters, and if he encounters difficult questions, he should ask the auxiliary ministers in time after the lecturer finishes speaking. Outside of that, there are no other holidays throughout the year except for the New Year and the weather such as the Great Cold and Heat.
As for the ritual of the sutra feast, it was much more solemn than the Japanese ceremony, and the cabinet scholars and officials of the six ministries personally participated in it. The feast is held in spring and autumn. Every month three times, every Tuesday. Spring lectures, starting on February 12 and ending on the second day of May; Autumn lectures begin on August 12 and end on October 2. A total of 15 times a year. The sutra feast mainly explains the four books and the five classics, and after the end, Guanglu Temple holds a banquet in the east of the Huangji Hall to entertain the officials who participate in the sutra feast.
Gao Pragmatic took this "class schedule" and thought to himself: It seems that my working time is roughly in the morning, and the prince's rest day is probably my rest day, and there are about nine days off every month, which is similar to the rest day of work in later generations - so my working hours are quite reliable, after all, the afternoon can be regarded as my personal time.
