When they returned home, it was already the New Year of the 44th year.
Meiwa held another consultation on the Overlord Action Plan.
Funny to say, this plan was actually formulated on the basis of the early British invasion of France, and the British had been tossing and turning for more than 2 years before and after the counteroffensive.
They began to prepare in September 1941.
Admiral Mountbatten, then Chief of Staff of the British Joint Operations Command, studied the feasibility of carrying out an amphibious landing in the European theater and opening up a second theater.
In December of the same year, after the United States and Vanity entered the war, Wakanda ignored the British, and the United States officially worked with the British planners, and soon the British came up with a draft plan to cross the English Channel and land in France, codenamed "Roundup".
Then, in January of this year, the British General Staff appointed Frederick E. Morgan. Lieutenant General Morgan assumed the post of Chief of Staff of the Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces (not yet appointed) and authorized him to draw up plans for an invasion of France, which was planned to begin with the code name Anvil ("ANVIL").
According to the Anvil plan, the Allies threw 3-5 divisions into the offensive along the Pas de Calais.
The route of attack was from Dover in England to Calais in France.
But the Germans defended Calais quite tightly.
Eventually, it was decided that 3-5 divisions were not enough, so the attack was extended to a wider area, and Montgomery preferred to include Caen in the attack.
Morgan's planners believed that extending the bridgehead to 60 miles would be beyond the Allies' available resources, but Montgomery believed that a solution should be found or the chief of staff should be replaced.
True, there was a feud between the two.
The controversy sparked a debate about the value of Project Anvil, and it was only then that Operation Overlord began.
But the meal has to be eaten one bite at a time, after all, Africa has not yet won.
In July 1942, at the same time as this plan was formulated, the Allies decided to land in North Africa in the autumn of 1942 and postpone the opening of a second theater in Europe until the first half of 1943.
However, at this time, the situation on the Soviet-German battlefield was very grim, the German army had advanced to Stalingrad, and Soviet Russia strongly demanded that Britain and the United States launch a landing operation in Europe to contain the German army and reduce the pressure on the Soviet army.
At that time, Britain had to hastily send an assault force of 6,018 people to land in Diep, France, but suffered a heavy defeat, with 5,810 casualties, a casualty rate of 96.5%.
The British are not doing it now.
And in January 1943, Britain and the United States had a meeting in Casablanca.
They adopted the decision to land in Sicily in the first half of the year, and in addition postponed the landing on the European continent until August 1943.
At this meeting, Britain insisted on the postponement of the landing on the European continent, citing the complexity and danger of a large-scale amphibious landing and the need to proceed with caution, citing the failure of Diep.
In fact, in addition to not being able to defeat Germany, Britain wanted to take advantage of the Soviet-German rivalry, and second, it wanted to use the power of the United States and Wa to restore the traditional power of the British Empire in North Africa and southern Europe before the war.
As for his second point, of course, Meiwa was opposed, and the two dogs didn't come forward before Xie Tet pushed back their broken ideas.
As a compromise, Britain had no choice but to agree to the creation of the Allied Special Planning Staff, which would be responsible for developing a landing plan in Europe.
Then the task was given to British Army Lieutenant General F. Morgan as Chief of Staff, but, as mentioned earlier, the commander was difficult to determine.
There is also a reason for this, because of the joint boycott of British inflation by the United States and Wales, Marshall and Britain are unhappy.
And because of the boycott of the United States and Wa, the current record of the US military in the European battlefield is not convincing.
Shet was awesome, but he was too young.
And Eva, help, his brain is only enough to bomb Berlin.
As a result, Morgan, who held the title of chief of staff, temporarily assumed the post of commander, and immediately after he took office, he formed the "Kausak".
"Kausak" is the English abbreviation of the Supreme Staff of the Allied European Expeditionary Force, and its main members are Deputy Chief of Staff, Brigadier General Ray Buck of the United States Army, representatives of the Army, Navy, Air Force, and all services related to the landing, Vice Admiral Mountbatten, commander of the British Joint Operations Command, who is responsible for commanding the sneak attack and harassment operations on the European continent, and Vice Admiral Shet of Wakanda, who are of course also members.
They began to make plans, but the financier had not yet entered the water.
It was not until May 1943 that the United States finally negotiated and officially decided to open a second battlefield.
During this time, "Kausak" was busy determining the landing site.
According to the lessons learned from previous landing operations, the landing site must meet the following three conditions: First, it must be within the radius of fighters taking off from British airfields, second, the crossing distance should be as short as possible, and third, there must be a large port nearby.
The 480 km stretch of coastline from Vlissingen in the Netherlands to Cherbourg in France is a good place to measure: the Contantine Peninsula, Calais and Normandy.
In further comparison, the narrow terrain of the Constantine Peninsula made it inconvenient to deploy large forces, and was the first to be rejected.
Calais and Normandy have their pros and cons, with Calais having the advantage of being the closest to the UK, only 33km, and being close to mainland Germany; The disadvantage is that Rommel's German army has the strongest defensive strength here, and the defenders are elite troops, with complete and strong fortifications, and there is no large port nearby, and there is also a lack of inland communication lines, which is not conducive to the development of depth after the landing.
Although Normandy is far away from Britain, it has the advantage that the German defense is weak, the terrain is open, and 30 divisions can be deployed at the same time, and the third is that it is only 80km away from Cherbourg, the largest port in northern France.
After several trade-offs and comparisons, "Kausak" chose Normandy, and on July 13, 1943, he came up with a specific plan, with "Overlord" as the code name for the battle plan and "Sea King" as the code name for the relevant naval operation.
Within this plan, it was initially planned to land three divisions on three beachheads, later known as "Omaha", "King" and "Juno", at a width of 32 km between Carentin and Caen, and to parachute two brigades at the same time.
The second echelon, consisting of 8 divisions, will occupy Cherbourg in two weeks.
The biggest problem in the whole plan was the port, that is, how to solve the logistical supply of the troops before the occupation of Cherbourg, knowing that Normandy was mostly windy and rough in May and June, and it was impossible to guarantee logistical supply by landing on the beachhead alone - this seemed to be an insurmountable difficulty.
Helpless, Rear Admiral John Hughes Hallett, the naval representative of the "Kausak", remembered Mountbatten's joke at a meeting: since there is no natural harbor, build an artificial harbor.
So there was no other way to solve the problem than to make parts and assemble them into an artificial port, and his idea was approved. On July 15, Morgan submitted the outline of the "Overlord" plan to the British-American Joint Chiefs of Staff.
And then came the Tehran conference.
At the meeting, Han Huaiyi was silent on some questions, and Roosevelt Churchill did not say who the commander was.
Joseph didn't talk much.
But Roosevelt was only worried about Han Huaiyi, after all, Wakanda played a great role in the current Pacific War, and Wakanda's attitude on the European battlefield was also very important.
Make him comfortable.
After returning, Han Huaiyi actually took the initiative to propose to him: "I personally recommend that the US generals serve as the commanders of the allied forces, and I also recommend personal candidates." ”
