697 History is made up of countless accidents

June 28 is a special day for the Serbs, more than 500 years ago, on June 28, 1389, the heyday of the Serbian kingdom was defeated by the Ottoman Empire in the Battle of Kosovo, the Serbian kingdom was destroyed, the army was massacred, and the Serbs became slaves of the Ottoman Empire.

Since the beginning of this year, June 28 has become an unforgettable day for Serbs, this day is known as St. Vitus Day, and every year Serbs hold a grand ceremony to commemorate the once glorious Serbian kingdom and remember the years of freedom and equality.

Last year, through the Balkan Wars, Serbia finally broke free from Ottoman slavery and became an independent state.

But in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, in Romania, there were still many Serbs who were ruled by aliens, so St. Vitus Day in 1913 was destined to have a special meaning for all Serbs.

June 28 is also a special day for the Crown Prince of Austria-Hungary, Archduke Ferdinand, who married Archcount Sophie Hotek 13 years ago on June 28, the thirteenth anniversary of their marriage.

In order to marry Sophie Hotek, Archduke Ferdinand paid the price of the heir to the throne of his descendants, according to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, if Ferdinand and Sophie Hotek marry, then Sophie's descendants will automatically lose the right to inherit the throne of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

On June 28, 1900, Archduke Ferdinand attended a secret cabinet meeting of the Habsburg dynasty, and solemnly promised in front of the Austro-Hungarian Emperor Joseph, the Austrian archbishop, the Hungarian archbishop, ministerial officials, and the Habsburg Grand Duke that he and Sophie's descendants, as well as the descendants of the descendants, would voluntarily renounce the right to inherit the throne, and finally married Sophie Hotek.

Three days later, Archduke Ferdinand and Sophie Hotek were married, and the vast Habsburg family was attended only by Archduke Ferdinand's mother and sisters, not even Archduke Ferdinand's younger brothers.

Later, Sophie was humiliated, she could not appear in public with Archduke Ferdinand, could not attend state dinners together, and could not even enjoy the opera in the same box, and when Archduke Ferdinand attended the court ball as the heir to the throne, Sophie was placed in a lower position, even the lowest female member of the royal family.

So whenever there is an opportunity, Archduke Ferdinand will always compensate Sophie Hotek as much as possible, in Vienna, Archduke Ferdinand has to follow the royal arrangement, even if he loves Sophie, he can't do anything, but in the remote areas of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Archduke Ferdinand can not care about the public eye, and give Sophie the glory and care she deserves.

In 1913, in the context of the arms race, Austria-Hungary was also expanding its army frantically, preparing for the coming world war, in Bosnia, this summer to hold an unprecedented scale of military exercises, as the crown prince Ferdinand is the chief prosecutor of the Austro-Hungarian army, he took Sophie to Bosnia on the 25th, while supervising military exercises, but also vacationing with Sophie, so that Sophie can really enjoy the respect she deserves as a grand duchess.

On Saturday, Archduke Ferdinand and Sophie went to the antique market in Bydilliz, a resort.

On Sunday, Archduke Ferdinand and Sophie celebrated Mass in the hotel's makeshift chapel.

Then Archduke Ferdinand sent a telegram to the three children, telling them that everything was fine with their parents and that they were looking forward to coming home the following Tuesday.

On June 28, Archduke Ferdinand and Sophie went to Sarajevo, the southernmost part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, for an official visit, and in order to allow Sophie to enjoy the glory of being a duchess more directly, Archduke Ferdinand decided to ride an open-top car with Sophie through Sarajevo to the city hall.

It was a sunny morning, the previous week had been rainy, the air was slightly chilly but fresh and moist, Archduke Ferdinand wore a traditional Austro-Hungarian top hat and the uniform of the Imperial Field Marshal, Sophie wore a white lady's top hat with feathers and a transparent veil with star decorations, she was in a very happy mood, because she was riding in an convertible, and she was worried about the rain, so Sophie also carried a parasol that was more decorative than practical.

In 1913, the city of Austria-Hungary was extremely narrow and the ground was uneven, and the people of Sarajevo heard that the Crown Prince and his wife had come to Sarajevo to flood the streets on both sides, and they were looking forward to seeing the crown prince and his wife.

The convertible drove slowly down the narrow streets, and Archduke Ferdinand and Sophie were in a good mood, waving to the cheering crowds on both sides of the street, and Archduke Ferdinand had always done a good job in this regard.

Austria-Hungary is a complex multi-ethnic country, this country has 16 languages, 13 nationalities, 5 regions, 16 lands, 2 parliaments, in 1859, Austria-Hungary lost Italy, in 1866, Austria-Hungary lost Germany, in 1878, Austria-Hungary acquired Bosnia through the Berlin Conference, but nominally Bosnia still belonged to the Ottoman Empire, just like Egypt under British control.

Grand Duke Ferdinand is considered to be the most likely person to put an end to all this, all along, Grand Duke Ferdinand believed that the Slavs, who are growing in population, should be given their due place in order to maintain the unity of Austria-Hungary, and the majority population of Bosnia is the Slavs, so Grand Duke Ferdinand believes that the people of Bosnia should like him, because he is fighting for the benefits that Bosnia deserves.

Before Archduke Ferdinand and Sophie arrived in Sarajevo, several Assassins from the Serbian Mafia Society, founded in 1911 and known as "Die or Die", advocated acts of terror with the goal of "realizing the idea of the nation and unifying all Serbian nations".

The Assassins, whose goal was to assassinate Archduke Ferdinand, made bombs and carried Belgian pistols with them to deal a fatal blow to the Austro-Hungarian crown prince when the opportunity arose.

The leader of the "Black Hand" and the head of the Serbian intelligence service is Colonel Dragutin Dimitrivic, nicknamed "The Sacred Cow", so it is difficult to tell the relationship between the "Black Hand" and the Serbian government, one thing is certain, before the "Black Hand" decided to assassinate Archduke Ferdinand, Serbian Prime Minister Pašić had actually received relevant information and issued a warning to the Austro-Hungarian side through the Serbian ambassador to Austria.

But the ambassador was also a radical Serbian nationalist, and after receiving Pašić's orders, he did not go to the Austro-Hungarian chief of police, nor to the Austro-Hungarian chief of the general staff, but to the Austro-Hungarian minister of finance, and did not say exactly what was about to happen, but only said in vague terms: maybe some Serbian youth would put real bullets in magazines and shoot them.

To put it simply, there may be an assassination.

A different person may be more vigilant, but for the Chancellor of the Exchequer, especially the Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1913 -

Well, in this day and age, assassinations are really commonplace, and in the 20 years before 1913, the leaders of the countries that were assassinated were the presidents of the United States, France, Mexico, Guatemala, Uruguay, and Dominica.

Countries where prime ministers have been assassinated include: Russia, Spain, Bulgaria, Greece, Persia, and Egypt.

The countries where members of the royal family were assassinated were: Austria, Italy, Serbia, Greece, and Portugal.

Therefore, the Chancellor of the Exchequer did not believe that the assassination would have any serious consequences.

In particular, of the six Assassins who infiltrated Sarajevo in the early stage, five were Serbs, their average age was less than twenty years old, and all five were suffering from tuberculosis, which was a terminal disease at the time of 1913, so no matter how you look at it, Archduke Ferdinand seems to be doomed.

On the way to the town hall, the Assassins attacked the car in which the Archduke Ferdinand and his wife were travelling, and an Assassin-made bomb was dropped on the convertible car in which the Archduke and his wife were travelling.

The driver noticed the abnormality and immediately accelerated, and Archduke Ferdinand saw the bomb and waved it to block it, and the bomb fell on the back of the car in which Archduke Ferdinand and his wife were riding, damaging a sedan and injuring several people.

Before the Archduke and his wife arrived at the town hall, the car in which the Archduke Ferdinand and his wife were traveling passed by the four Assassins, and except for the bomb, the other three did not attack, although they were all armed, and in the subsequent investigation, the third Assassin was the most honest, admitting that he was scared at the time, so he did not dare to draw his gun.

After the welcome ceremony at the town hall, Archduke Ferdinand offered to visit the injured in the hospital who had been injured by bombs, a Habsburg tradition, as a sign of the royal family's love for his subjects.

On the way to the hospital, the fifth Assassin did not move, and the lead car did not go to the hospital, but followed the established route, and the Bosnian governor in the convoy noticed that the lead car was going the wrong way and ordered the convoy to stop and change course.

It was a coincidence that would have a profound impact on the future world, when the car in which Archduke Ferdinand and his wife were traveling was parked on the street less than five feet away from the last Assassin, Gavrio Princip.

Princip, who was only 19 years old, the leader of the assassination team and a tuberculosis patient, pulled out an M1910 pistol produced by Belgium and the Starr Arsenal and fired two shots at Archduke Ferdinand and his wife.

Archduke Ferdinand was shot in the neck and was bleeding profusely.

However, Archduke Ferdinand did not care about his injury, but hugged Sophie, who was more seriously injured, and called Sophie's name, hoping that Sophie would live for their children.

Sophie was shot in the abdomen, injuring the major arteries, and a few minutes later, Archduke Ferdinand and his wife died.

Gavrio Princip shot himself and attempted to kill himself, but was stopped by the crowd around him, after which Princip swallowed a bottle of cyanide, but the cyanide had expired and Princip did not die.

In any case, the world has entered a whole new phase.
