Chapter 61: The Adventures of Gompati
A group of cavalry galloped in the direction of Bucharest from a distance, and behind them was a much larger cavalry force in hot pursuit.
Gompati really felt stupid and naΓ―ve to listen to Alexander's agitation so easily.
According to Gompati's idea, it is of course best to collect a few artillery pieces first, then find a place with a good view, which is easy to defend and difficult to attack, and then consider whether it is time to engage the enemy in a hand-to-hand battle after using enough shells to bombard the enemy.
Of course, since the other party is an Ottoman, then it is best to only do the front part, as for the hand-to-hand combat, he does not have that idea for the time being.
However, Alexander obviously did not want Gompati to complete his idea step by step, so in the absence of artillery and favorable terrain, Alexander ordered Montina's army to cross the Danube from the upper reaches and launch a surprise attack on the right flank of the Ottomans, who had already advanced to the outskirts of Bucharest.
It turned out that Alexander's move was completely unexpected by Bayezid II!
In the Sultan's imagination, the Hungarian king Ladislas II either completely cowered in the city of Bucharest, relying on the strong walls to resist stubbornly, or simply abandoned the city, and fled back to Hungary to lick the wounds exposed by the loss of self-esteem because he had completely trampled under his feet.
As for the possibility that the Hungarian king might choose to make peace, Bayezid II had thought of it, and although there was little hope for this possibility, the sultan would not be surprised if Bucharest did send negotiating emissaries.
But in any case, the only thing that the Sultan did not expect was that the enemy would take the initiative to attack him!
Because he did not expect it, when he received the news of the attack on the right flank, Bayezid II not only did not believe it, but even thought that his generals had deliberately described the local harassing guerrilla militia as the enemy's regular troops in order to get rid of the losses suffered by dereliction of duty.
The Sultan was furious about this, and although he had ordered Elip and Rwa to encircle and suppress the local guerrillas, he also knew that this was not an easy task, especially since Helva had taken up this guerrilla war with his army as Duke of Zagreb, and the war of law and order in his rear had become no easier than a frontal battle.
But even so, he still didn't think that the Balkan people's army would dare to challenge his army head-on, so when he heard that his right flank was attacked, the first thing the Sultan thought of was that the general in charge of the right flank deliberately exaggerated the enemy's strength in order to shirk responsibility.
The attack was carried out by an Ottoman army stationed in the upper reaches of the Danube, which was responsible for monitoring the forts along the far outskirts of Bucharest.
This army is typical of the tribal armies, which evolved from the tribal armies of the Ottoman Empire in the early years, the earliest armed forces of the Ottoman Empire, and for the long two centuries before the establishment of the new army, these tribal armies took on the historical mission of shaping the empire.
It was only as time went on that the tribal armies were gradually replaced by new armies and conscripts from conquered vassal states, and even they knew that it might not be long before they would never be seen again on the battlefields of the Sultan's conquest of Europe.
But even so, these tribal militias were still very strong, at least when the Montina army launched a surprise attack on them, and they quickly stabilized their positions after the initial panic.
The first to attack was always the Bohemian cavalry.
Alexander had enough confidence in his bohemians, and the speed and suddenness of the hussars played an important role in this massive raid.
For Alexander, in particular, his real aim was not to fight a proper field battle with the Ottomans on the plains outside Bucharest.
In this case, the whirlwind battlefield mobility of the Bohemian cavalry became a crucial key factor.
It's just that neither Alexander, who made the plan, nor Gompati, who carried out the plan, did not expect the Ottoman army to react so quickly, or that they somewhat despised the flexibility and aggressiveness of the Ottomans on the battlefield.
The Ottoman army of this era was arguably the most powerful and aggressive military group in the world.
Actively invent all kinds of advanced combat tactics, and take the initiative to accept new things and avant-garde and sometimes deviant technical equipment.
There is no dullness, and there is no complacency.
And the Ottoman officers had a strong desire to fight.
So as soon as the Bohemian cavalry had broken through a fortified area on the west bank of the Danube, garrisoned by several hundred tribal troops, and had not had time to expand on this small victory, they found themselves surrounded by reinforcements from the Ottoman army.
Gompati, who led the Bohemians, decisively ordered all the seized booty to be thrown away, and then he did not care whether the Bohemians obeyed this order or not, and immediately ordered his army to rush downstream along the Danube.
Some of the Bohemians could not afford their possessions, but they soon discovered that their lives were more important than those outside of them, especially when they saw that the Ottomans were so quickly swarming at them from all sides, and the Bohemians immediately threw down their booty and fled.
Some of them, in order to escape more happily, or to lure the pursuers behind them to pick up their belongings in distraction, did not hesitate to abandon even their original wealth, and for a time the road was full of discarded money bags, jewelry, and precious silks and furs.
But even so, the Ottomans behind did not have the slightest intention of giving up, on the contrary, they pursued more vigorously, and there was a great tendency to refuse to give up until they completely tore apart the Gompati people.
In fact, all the Ottomans were so persistent because Bayezid II was really angry.
When the Sultan heard that his right flank had been breached, the Sultan's first thought was not the size of the enemy and his own losses, but what had happened to his father, Mehmed II, on his expedition to Bucharest.
When Mehmed II was about to take Bucharest, he was inexplicably defeated by an army of local mad farmers, and even he himself was wounded in the melee, so that he finally had to retreat.
Bayezid II was not detached by the fact that the enemy had only raided a fortification on one side of the line, and he could not tolerate the possibility of defeat by such an "accident", nor was he arrogant enough to think that he was strong enough to ignore the mistakes that led to his father's defeat.
Because of this, the Sultan ordered that the army that attacked them must be eliminated in any case, and at the same time it was necessary to find out where this army came from.
Gompati cursed in his heart, he didn't know whether he was scolding Alexander for his self-righteousness or his own stupidity and recklessness, the Ottoman army chasing behind was concentrating on him from several directions, he already clearly felt that the space he could move was getting smaller and smaller, although the fortress along the coast of Bucharest in the distance seemed close in front of him, but he did not know if he would be able to get there before the Ottomans closed up.
The sound of the horn came with the cold river breeze, and although the wind hurt his face like a knife, the feeling was indescribably comfortable for Gompati today.
"Push hard, if you don't want the infidels to be torn to shreds, run!"
Gompati shouted to the bohemians beside him, the wind blowing into his mouth and into his stomach seemed to make the hot feeling in his chest much more comfortable, but the thunderous sound of horses' hooves behind him seemed to be the footsteps of death approaching.
You can already see the fortress on the bank of the river, and you can even faintly see the trebuchets standing above the fortress.
A warning horn sounded, and the fortress had apparently noticed them, but out of caution, the other party clearly did not want to let this army of unknown origin come closer.
"Maybe it's going to be shelled soon." Gompati muttered under his breath that although he liked to wreak havoc on the enemy with artillery, he did not want to taste the shelling himself.
So Gompati had to change direction slightly, his aim was not actually to the fortress on the riverbank, but to continue north along the bank, and after crossing the fortress, he ran directly in the direction of Bucharest.
Gompati really didn't expect to be so embarrassed, according to Alexander's plan, he should have taken the initiative to attack the Ottomans and then gradually lead the enemy's pursuers to the vicinity of the river bank fortress, and then after inducing the two sides to fight, he chose to withdraw from the battlefield in a safe and orderly manner, or if he had the opportunity, he would give the Ottomans a hard blow before withdrawing from the battle.
But now things were completely different from what they had thought, and the Ottomans reacted so quickly that Gompati didn't even have a chance to completely shake off his pursuers.
He could only desperately lead the Bohemians along the flank of the riverbank fortress towards Bucharest, and at the same time he secretly prayed in his heart that the defenders of the fortress could help them delay the pursuers behind them somewhat.
However, Gompati was obviously overly optimistic, although the defenders of the fortress already knew that this army that suddenly appeared should be reinforcements from somewhere, but when they saw the strange and fierce Ottoman army chasing after them, the defenders chose to be silent and watch strangely except for the possible siege of the city nervously and vigilantly.
The Ottoman army had almost brushed the edge of the fortress, and recently one of the pursuers had even come within full range of the fort's artillery.
But the defenders of the fortress kept silent watch on the Ottomans outside until puffs of smoke and dust blew onto the walls of the fortress.
"Why don't we open fire?" A young soldier with a spear in his hand asked his companion next to him, "Aren't those our own?" β
"Shut up, don't worry about it," his companion whispered, and then he leaned into the distance to take a closer look, then shook his head and sighed, "Those people are unlucky, they will be killed by the Ottomans." β
The young soldier was about to say something, but he could only close his mouth when he saw his companion's glaring eyes.
"God bless them."
A defending officer stood on the watchtower high above the fortress and looked at the distant figures, and said helplessly.
Next to him, another officer drew a cross on his chest and muttered: "May God forgive us for our sins." β
Gompati began to worry about his fate.
The strange behavior of the riverbank fortress made him realize that the future was not good, and although Alexander had said that the purpose of the attack was to break the silence between the two sides and cause a fight, the strange silence of the fortress defenders made Gompati realize that the situation was more serious than they had previously thought.
It was clear that Bucharest was already showing signs of peace, otherwise the defenders would not have been able to watch them being pursued by the Ottomans and remain silent.
What happens if you keep going, even if you escape to Bucharest?
Gompati did not know where Alexander was at this time, but when he led the Bohemians in the first attack, Alexander was marching with Montina's army towards the left bank of the Alger River, which crossed the Danube.
And along the left bank of the Alger River, upstream, is the Upper Tartary Gesh, where the imperial camp of Bayezid II was stationed!
"I hope the Count doesn't do anything stupid, or we may all be out of luck this time."
Gompati was already feeling the extreme oppression, and he knew that the area where he could maneuver was getting smaller and smaller, and that a part of the Ottoman cavalry was rapidly advancing along their left side.
They were apparently intent on cutting off Gompati before they entered the outskirts of Bucharest, and then squeezed them from several directions at once towards the riverbank.
Although he had guessed the Ottomans' intentions, Gompati had no countermeasures, and his only recourse was to hope that he would be able to enter the outskirts of Bucharest before the road was cut off, and even if there was some tacit understanding between the two sides, it would be impossible for the Bucharestans to see the Ottomans approaching the city and threatening the city.
There was a rush of horses' hooves on the road ahead, and Gompati's heart suddenly tensed, he knew that the cavalry that would appear outside the city at this time could only be Ottomans, which made his heart, which was still a little lucky, keep sinking down.
"Prepare the musket." Gompati panted behind him, and the Bohemians commanded, "Remember to charge immediately after the first shot, and see if you survive to see if you have God's plan!" β
The Bohemians had crossed their chests, they had already experienced too many life-and-death battles, and danger could no longer easily shake their minds for them, for them, battle or death was only a matter of moments.
"Get ready!" Gompati also drew his musket, his marksmanship was far less than that of gunnery, but he was no longer able to care about that.
In the distance, the swaying figures of the team have appeared, and the strong smell of oncoming blood can be smelled in the distance.
Then Gompati heard a voice that was slightly stiff, but at this moment sounded almost like an angel: "We are the defenders of Bucharest, and in the name of Princess Sofia Alessandra Valleollio, I command you to tell who you are!" β
