[0483 Wei Bao and the foreign missionaries with their own hearts]
In fact, it is easy to understand why the foreign missionaries used Chinese to communicate with each other, and these people came from different European countries.
Mainly Germany, of course, at this time it is not called Germany, it should be said that the Greater Prussia region, but also Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands, each of which has a different language, and they communicate with each other, mainly in Italian.
At this time, English was not yet mainstream. Italian was obscure, and it was a bit difficult for them to communicate in Italian.
So after they stayed in Daming for a long time, the communication between them was Chinese.
"Mr. Wei Bao, did you make this telescope yourself? Or where did you buy it? Where is there such advanced science and technology? I can't imagine it, I really want to go there to see and learn. Jinnige asked Wei Bao sincerely.
Wei Bao smiled proudly, and said shamelessly: "It's me, I made it!" However, only when I go to my Weijiazhuang Academy of Sciences, I will have the relevant equipment to give you insight! Including glass technology, it is also unique to our Weijiazhuang! There are four special wines in Weijiazhuang sold in Beijing, have you seen it? The kind of glass bottle for wine. ”
"Yes, yes, yes! I remembered, I've seen it, it turns out that it's your Weijiazhuang's wine? Your glass craftsmanship has far surpassed that of Europe, you are amazing! Jinnige said sincerely: "If it is possible, I hope to go to the Wei Jiazhuang that you said Mr. Wei Bao said, can I have a look?" ”
"Of course, you are very welcome." Wei Bao smiled: "But I welcome more people who are willing to join Weijiazhuang, because there are many technologies that surpass others, and I don't want to leak them casually." ”
A group of missionaries heard Wei Bao say this, and they became even more interested, in this era, there are not many people who have such a strong sense of knowledge protection, not to mention that the other party is just a teenager from the Ming Dynasty.
Jinnige smiled: "I don't know about the others, I don't have any problems, I have already thought about dying in the Ming Kingdom, at my age, there are not many years to live, I hope to do research for the rest of my life and spread Catholicism." ”
Wei Bao smiled indifferently, "Very welcome." However, Wei Bao didn't say too much.
This is Wei Bao's habit of negotiation, he likes to test it first, and then talk about specific things, first to grasp the other party's ideas, and then talk about his own ideas.
Watching the lunar eclipse, which lasted for nearly three hours, was almost over.
Wu Xuexia was already a little impatient, and urged Wei Bao several times to go back.
"You go back first, it's over soon, I want to ask these missionaries to go and eat something." Wei Bao replied.
"Are you so interested in these foreigners? Do you want to ...... Want them to come with you? Do you fancy their knowledge? But does that knowledge have anything to do with your scientific research? These foreigners can't even say what we say clearly. Wu Xuexia was indeed very smart, and immediately guessed Wei Bao's thoughts, but she was very puzzled.
Wei Bao glanced at Wu Xuexia with a smile: "There are still many things you don't understand, life is more than just scientific research!" ”
Life is not only about scientific examinations, but also when such words come out, which makes Wu Xuexia very speechless, "Then you want to take the martial arts test, don't you?" ”
"Martial arts is not a scientific expedition? If I can't pass the township examination and get the admission ticket for the township examination, I won't participate in the scientific examination again! Wei Bao laughed. After saying this, I suddenly felt a sense of relaxation. In modern times, for the sake of exams, the whole person is like a pen, and he is simply a victim of exam-oriented education, why can't he let go of it in ancient times?
Although entering the officialdom through the formal imperial examination is very important for his development, if this road really doesn't work, it seems that there is nothing!? The sky can't fall!
Wu Xuexia looked at Wei Bao strangely, not knowing what he thought: "I'm not going back, I want to be with you." ”
Wei Bao shrugged his shoulders: "Whatever, just don't be sleepy." ”
After a while, the moon came out completely, still big and round, and shining brightly on the world.
At this time, there are not many people who insist on this point, although the capital is more prosperous than other places, but the biological clock of people in this era is early, and when it is dark, it is also the time when the vast majority of people sleep.
The common people are reluctant to light the lamp, the big families are willing to light the lamp, and at eight or nine o'clock in the evening, it is time to go to bed, and the people who have not slept at more than ten o'clock in the present are either the officials on duty who have errands, or the playboy brothers like Wu Sanfu, or the girls in the Qinglou, the girls in the kiln.
Wei Bao expressed to a group of missionaries that he wanted to invite them to eat.
A group of missionaries were very happy, they obviously slept later than ordinary people in the Ming Dynasty, maybe because of the biological clock, they usually slept in the early morning, but because there is a church, there is a morning class in the morning, and they get up very early in the morning, they get up at five or six o'clock, and they usually take a nap in the afternoon.
The missionaries were polite at first, and when they saw that Wei Bao's hospitality was very sincere, and they also wanted to get acquainted with an alternative Ming man like Wei Bao, who had financial resources and knew scientific knowledge, they readily agreed.
Wei Bao asked them if there were any taboos about eating.
In the early days, because the church was born out of Judaism, there were differences over what to eat. The church held a special meeting to discuss the matter, and finally decided that all but "strangled animals" and "blood" could be eaten.
Of course, the slaughtering industry rarely uses the method of "strangulation", so only "blood" is left to eat.
On this issue, some churches still advocate forbidding the eating of blood because it is commanded in the Bible, and because blood symbolizes life.
Of course, there are churches and Christians who don't see it this way, believing that it is just a contemporary solution to the problems of the early church, and the essence of that solution is to remove many "don't eat" rules.
After Wei Bao learned about these, he knew that there were no taboos for these people, and these could basically belong to 'false priests', many of them were not orthodox believers, but for the convenience of going to the Ming Dynasty, the spread of Western culture, and the convenience of understanding the Ming Dynasty.
So Wei Bao arranged them in a Tiandi business restaurant not far from Xuanwumenli Street, where they lived.
At this time, most of the restaurants have closed, and the restaurants of Tiandi Firm are no exception.
However, the president has an order, and the cook has to get up when he sleeps.
In this way, when everyone arrived, they ate behind closed doors, and dozens of them were equal to a meal.
After knowing that this restaurant belonged to Wei Bao, a group of foreign missionaries admired Wei Bao's strength even more, because Wei Bao looked so young.
"Mr. Wei Bao, don't mind if I ask about your family history? The gentleman's family must be very rich. Kinney said tentatively.
Wei Bao smiled slightly, "My parents are ordinary farmers in western Liaoning, and just last winter, my whole family almost fled the famine. ”
When the missionaries heard this, they were amazed.
Wei Bao saw that everyone didn't believe it, so he briefly told his story.
Wu Xuexia said softly: "Didn't you rely on hijacking my family's car of high-grade fur?" ”
"Correct, it's not your family's, it's Jiannu's! Moreover, I am not hijacking, I bought it with real money. Wei Bao laughed.
"Hmph, bought for real money? You just said it yourself, your whole family was almost forced to flee the famine, let me ask, since your family has silver to buy a cart of high-quality furs, let alone 40,000 or 50,000 taels of silver, right? With so much money, can you still afford to go out and flee the famine? Wu Xuexia immediately exposed Wei Bao's lies.
Wei Bao secretly sighed that there was no lasting truth in the lie, and it was obvious that Wu Xuexia had asked the point.
"When it came time to buy fur, I've been in business for a while! And, who told you that I have to pay all the money for fur in one lump sum? Can't I pay in installments? Wei Bao said stiffly.
"Don't say it, don't explain it." Wu Xuexia didn't want to listen anymore, and glanced at Wei Bao with an expression that she understood everything.
Wei Bao happened to be too lazy to explain.
After Wei Bao told his own experience, the distance between a group of foreign missionaries and Wei Bao was suddenly shortened, and Li Zubai, an official of the Qintianjian who came with him, also praised Wei Bao, saying that Wei Bao's experience was simply unheard of, and he could be called a legend in the Ming business world!
The missionaries also shared their experiences with each other.
Born Nicolas Trigo, Kinnecot was born on March 3, 1577 in the city of Douai, in present-day France, in Flanders. Kinney Pavilion lived under Spanish rule. In 1615, when Kinnige published Matteo Ricci's Chinese Notes on the Chinese Expedition to China, which he translated and added to in Augsburg, Germany, he explicitly signed himself "Belgian" on the cover.
More than half a century after his death, Douai, the hometown of Kinney Pavilion, was conquered by the French and incorporated into the French territory, so Kinney Pavilion was regarded as French.
Because he and Matteo Ricci started the precedent of using Latin as the Chinese phonetic, it is still passed down to the later generations when Wei Bao crossed over. Jinnige has a grand wish, that is, to bring people to introduce the "7,000 Western Books" that he has collected and which are now the most advanced in Western science to the Chinese intellectuals, not only to introduce, but also to translate, which is a very huge project that must be supported by the Ming government.
"I support this matter! It doesn't matter how much money you spend. Wei Bao said: "Money is still a small matter, I think, you mainly don't have so many learned missionaries, you must know foreign and Chinese, an average of two books a year per person, if you want to complete such a huge project in ten years, you need at least about 500 people, right?" ”
"Yes, that's the biggest problem." Jinnige nodded and said: "However, we have more than thirty people here, I can still contact some missionaries to come over, and I can gather a hundred people, if you have the support of Mr. Wei Bao, regardless of the funds, and hundreds of Han people to study with us, within two years, they will be able to reach the same level as us." ”
Wei Bao was overjoyed: "No problem, I will fully support your plan!" Not to mention that I don't need a million taels of silver, it's a million taels of silver, two million taels of silver, and I invest in them! ”
A group of missionaries were very excited and expressed their willingness to participate in this huge project of Kinney Pavilion, after the death of Matteo Ricci, Kinney Pavilion was already the most appealing figure of European missionaries in China, although the imperial court did not attach much importance to it, but they were still very confident.
Wei Bao smiled slightly, secretly wondering how could the imperial court pay attention to it? Should you still be in the Wanli Dynasty?
Emperor Wanli was a person who had money in his hands, and he was a fun-loving person who was more open-minded and easy to accept new things.
Now that the power of the court is controlled by Wei Zhongxian and Wei Gonggong, Wei Zhongxian doesn't have enough time to exclude dissidents, where will he care about the idle affairs of you foreigners?
When Matteo Ricci came to the Ming Dynasty, the experience was also very bumpy.
On September 10, 1583, Matteo Ricci and Luo Mingjian entered China, asked for permission from Wang Pan, built a small house with a church next to the Chongxi Pagoda, and established the first missionary station in Zhaoqing.
Matteo Ricci published the first world map in Chinese and drafted the first Ten Commandments of Ancestral God in Chinese with Luo Mingjian. After several attempts, Matteo Ricci and Luo Mingjian were unable to establish a new station, and Luo Mingjian was recalled by the Pope to Rome to arrange for papal envoys to meet the Chinese Emperor, while Matteo Ricci and Father McAnton remained in Zhaoqing.
In 1584, Matteo Ricci was allowed to live in Zhaoqing, Guangdong, with Father Luo Mingjian. They claimed to be from "Tianzhu" to Chinese officials, leading Chinese to think they were Buddhists.
Matteo Ricci explained why he came to China: "We are priests from the far west, because we admire China, we want to stay, we die here to serve God. He did not dare to answer directly about the purpose of the mission, or he might be expelled.
For the purpose of preaching, they brought many supplies from the West, such as statues of the Virgin, maps, astrolabes and prisms. Among them is Euclid's Geometrical Primitive.
The various new things in the West brought by Matteo Ricci have attracted many curious Chinese. In particular, the map he brought opened the eyes of the Chinese.
Matteo Ricci, who entered China, praised Chinese civilization very much, except that he had not yet bathed in "our holy Catholic faith", "China's greatness is unparalleled in the world" and "China is not only a kingdom, China is actually a world." ”
He lamented that "Plato's ideals as a theoretical narrative in the Republic have been put into practice in China." ”
And he also found that the Chinese were very knowledgeable, "very proficient in medicine, natural sciences, mathematics, and astronomy." ”
But he also found that "among the Chinese, science is not much of an object of study." ”
In August 1584, Matteo Ricci established the "Xianhua Temple" in Zhaoqing and began his missionary work. At first, the mission was very low-key. The priests acted cautiously and focused on learning the Chinese language and Chinese etiquette in order to win the trust of the Chinese, especially the officials. They wore the garb of Buddhist monks, believing that this would win the favor of the people, and they also felt that it was not much different from the attire of a Catholic priest. It also made the Chinese more convinced that they were monks from afar. They hung a picture of the Virgin Mary here, and many scholars, officials, and even monks came to bow down, and they were very excited. But from the Chinese's point of view, this is more of a ceremonial nature than a religious one. It is also reported that they feared that the Chinese would mistake their god for a female one when they saw the portrait of Mary, and instead hung the image of Christ.
In 1584, Matteo Ricci produced and published the Complete Map of Mountains and Seas, which was the first time that Chinese came into contact with modern geography. Matteo Ricci took advantage of the opportunity to explain various Western things while introducing their Catholic faith. They translated the Ten Commandments, the Lord's Prayer, the Hymn to Our Lady, and the Catechism. He also distributed the "Records of God" written by Luo Mingjian to explain the doctrine of the Catholic Church in Chinese. Matteo Ricci lived in Zhaoqing for six years, and in addition to bringing the fruits of the European Renaissance, he systematically studied traditional Chinese culture, during which he introduced modern mathematics, geometry, world maps, Western music and other Western civilizations.
In the summer of 1589, in the seventeenth year of Wanli, the new governor of Guangdong expelled the missionaries from Zhaoqing.
In 1590, Matteo Ricci was instructed by Fan Li'an to draft a letter to the Ming Emperor in the name of the Pope, which also said that the Pope Xishi Du V was the "Du Monk Emperor" who lived in the "Tianzhu Kingdom", because he hoped to preach the "Orthodox Church of God", "promote mercy, and help the world", specially sent "Boya Confucian monks" to promote the religion, and sent "virtuous and Confucian scholars" and other four people into China, hoping that the Ming Emperor could "give the four monks a lot, welcome and send them off along the way, and travel to China". After much effort, Matteo Ricci was sent to Shaozhou, where he established a second missionary station.
In 1594, Matteo Ricci, along with a Chinese general sent to the Korean border, made an initial attempt to enter Beijing. But when he arrived in Nanjing, he had to return to his station. In 1595 (the twenty-third year of Wanli), Matteo Ricci was given the opportunity to go to Nanjing under the pretext of treating the son of an official who had served in the north. But after arriving in Nanjing, the officials accompanying Ricci gradually lost interest in him, and Ricci had to try to stay in Nanjing on his own. This time, however, it failed. He had no choice but to return to Nanchang, where he was granted permission to live and establish a third missionary station.
Members of the Ming royal family and officials at all levels were very interested in gifts such as globes, glassware, and Western-bound books, so Matteo Ricci once again held a "popular science" exhibition in his residence, performed advanced memory methods, published "On Making Friends", and began to write "The True Meaning of God", selecting quotations from Western greats suitable for Chinese ethics and publishing them. He abandoned the method of building churches and preaching publicly, and further replaced the concept of "God" with "God" that has existed in China since ancient times.
Matteo Ricci's three years of missionary work in Nanchang were also a process of gradual formation of his missionary strategy through exploration and practice. He had close contacts and friendly dialogues with the gentry in Jiangxi, and in the process developed a successful missionary strategy, the "Nanchang Missionary Model".
In 1596, Matteo Ricci was appointed head of the Jesuit diocese of China by Van Lien, with Matteo Ricci in charge of missionary activities in China. He also instructed Matteo Ricci to find a way to go to Peking to meet the Chinese emperor in order to achieve a strong guarantee of missionary work in China. He also sent many gifts from Macao for the Emperor of China. In Nanchang, Matteo Ricci met the governor of Jiangxi, Lu Wanyuan, and showed him the prism, the Western notation and clocks, and explained the contents of Western books, as well as mathematical problems and sundial time keeping problems to local scholars.
It was here that Matteo Ricci successfully predicted a solar eclipse on September 22, 1596, and he quickly became a famous figure. During this period, he made friends with many Confucian scholars and magnates, and was invited by the famous scholar Zhang Huang to give lectures and exchanges in the famous Bailudong Academy, and established friendly relations with King Jian'an and King Le'an, descendants of the royal family in Nanchang, etc.
In 1597, Matteo Ricci was appointed director of the Chinese mission.
On June 25, 1598, Matteo Ricci and another priest, Father Guo Jujing, left Nanchang for Nanjing, together with Wang Zhongming.
In early July 1598, they arrived in Nanjing, and in 1598, Matteo Ricci's first visit to Beijing was facilitated by Wang Zhongming, the secretary of the Nanjing Ministry of Rites. Wang Zhongming was an old friend of Matteo Ricci's missionary staff in Shaozhou, and he was about to report to Beijing at the time.
On the occasion of the birthday of the Wanli Emperor, Wang Zhongming invited Matteo Ricci to Beijing to celebrate his birthday, and Matteo Ricci also prepared European objects such as chiming bells and eight-tone pianos to present to the emperor. The group left Nanjing by waterway and headed north along the Grand Canal.
On September 7, 1598, Matteo Ricci arrived in Beijing after two months. The long journey and the summer heat made the missionaries fall ill for a while, and the joy of arriving in Beijing made them forget the hardships of the journey. Matteo Ricci wrote in his diary: "This is a very gratifying thing, and we should not let it go in silence; Just think of how many oceans Christianity has crossed, and after such a long period of approach, it has finally entered this kingdom, and its messengers have finally entered the imperial capital. However, things after that were far less smooth than Ricci had imagined. At that time, it was the time of Japan's invasion of Korea, and the entire capital was heavily guarded and the atmosphere was tense, and people were afraid that they would get into trouble by befriending foreigners. First, the eunuchs contacted by Wang Zhongming refused to introduce Matteo Ricci into the palace, and then Wang Zhongming himself stopped helping.
Although Matteo Ricci tried his best to maneuver around Beijing, he still ran into walls everywhere, and even his old friends avoided him. Matteo Ricci was unable to stay in Beijing for a long time, and encountered financial difficulties, so he had to return to Nanjing after only staying for a little more than a month. Although he did not meet the emperor, Matteo Ricci's first trip to Beijing was very fruitful. He first proved that the Khitan recorded in "Marco Polo's Travels" is China, and the national capital "Khan Bali" is Beijing. During the journey, Matteo Ricci also edited the first Chinese and Western dictionary with Father Guo Jujing, "The Meaning of Ordinary Questions and Answers", and for the first time tried to use the Latin alphabet to phonetize Chinese characters. In addition, he completed the translation and annotation of the Four Books, which played an important role in the spread of Chinese culture to the West.
Matteo Ricci settled in Nanking on February 6, 1599. A fourth mission station was established.
During his stay in Nanjing, Matteo Ricci made many famous friends through Qu Taisu's help, such as Ye Xianggao, a waiter of the Nanjing Ministry of Rites, and thinkers Li Zhen and Xu Guangqi. Of course, this is mainly due to people's admiration for his knowledge of the natural sciences. It is worth mentioning that Matteo Ricci also had a debate with a Sanhuai monk in Nanjing, in which Matteo Ricci clearly prevailed with his scientific speculation.
He also built the fourth Catholic church in the mainland on West Chongli Street in Hongwugang in Zhengyangmen, and his residence in Zhuanwan of Chengxi Luo Temple later became a famous Catholic church, Shigu Road Catholic Church. These activities made Nanjing one of the most important missionary centers in the history of Catholicism in China.
In 1600, Matteo Ricci took on a new assignment and began planning a trip to Beijing. It didn't take long for him to contact Wang Zhongming, who was the secretary of the Nanjing Ministry of Rites, to take him to Nanjing with him, and Wang Zhongming also said that he would take him to Beijing.
On May 18, 1600 (the 28th year of Wanli), Matteo Ricci set out from Nanjing for Beijing with Father Pondi and a gift to be presented to the emperor, but due to the blackmail and obstruction of the eunuch Ma Tang, the missionaries were delayed in Tianjin for nearly half a year and arrived in Beijing on January 24, 1601.
As soon as Matteo Ricci arrived in Beijing, he began to organize gifts for the emperor. A total of 16 tributes were listed on the list of self-ringing bells, Bibles, "Atlas of All Nations", and the Atlantic Piano, and the Wanli Emperor was very interested in these tributes, and the Wanli Emperor was both curious and awe-inspiring about those religious relics, and he called Jesus on the cross "living immortal", and gave the statue of the Virgin Mary to his mother, the Holy Empress Dowager.
For the size of the two self-striking bells, the Wanli Emperor liked the most, and the small one was often played with by him; The larger one, placed in a fine attic, was in charge of striking the time in the palace. Due to the complexity of the chiming bell and the need for frequent maintenance, missionaries were allowed to enter the palace regularly to overhaul it. Emperor Wanli was also very curious about Matteo Ricci's Western piano, and he ordered Matteo Ricci to teach the eunuchs to play. Matteo Ricci asked his assistant Pondy to teach the eunuchs, and he himself composed eight pieces of music in the form of religious hymns, filled in short Chinese lyrics, and named them "Xiqin Eight Songs". Whenever the melodious sound of the piano echoed in the palace, the Wanli Emperor would think of this priest from the West. It was these "European objects" that opened the door for Matteo Ricci to enter the court, and the Wanli Emperor appreciated him and allowed him to stay in Beijing, where he was deeply trusted.
In 1601, Mingshenzong issued an edict allowing Matteo Ricci and others to live in Beijing for a long time, and were summoned to the Forbidden City in Beijing as European envoys. From then on, he will have the fortune of the imperial court until his death. But the Ming court did not notice at all that the purpose of Matteo Ricci's permanent stay in Beijing was to spread Christianity.
Matteo Ricci was in Beijing to enrich his knowledge of the East and the West, and to make friends with Chinese scholars. He often talks with his guests about God, souls, heaven and hell, and writes new books. From 1602 to 1605, he published the third edition of the Chinese world map of the Liangyi Xuanlan, as well as other works such as The True Meaning of God, The Catholic Essentials and Twenty-five Words, which won the respect of many Chinese intellectuals.
By 1605, there were 200 Catholics in Beijing, several of whom were ministers. The most famous of these, and the one that later helped Matteo Ricci's missionary cause the most, was the "Three Pillars of the Holy Religion" - Xu Guangqi, Li Zhizao and Yang Tingyun.
Xu Guangqi, a native of Songjiang Prefecture in Nanzhili, met Matteo Ricci in Nanjing, and later became a Catholic. During his time in Beijing, Xu Guangqi was working at the Hanlin Academy, and he formed a deep friendship with Matteo Ricci, and the two worked together to translate works such as "The Origin of Geometry" and "The Law of Measurement".
Li Zhizao is a native of Renhe, Zhejiang, and was the Shaoqing of Taifu Temple at the time. He studied Western science under Matteo Ricci and later joined Catholicism. He collaborated with Matteo Ricci on books such as "Fingering in the Same Text".
Yang Tingyun was a fellow villager of Li Zhizao and served as the overseer of the imperial history in Beijing. Yang Tingjun was a devout Buddhist in his early years, and was later baptized into the Church under the inspiration of Matteo Ricci and Li Zhizao.
The "Three Pillars of the Holy Church" put their doctrine into practice, persuaded their families and friends to join the Church, provided funds for the missionaries, and defended the Catholic Church in the face of its martyrdom and tried to protect the missionaries.
Through Matteo Ricci's unremitting efforts, Catholicism spread in China. After Matteo Ricci stayed in Beijing, the number of Catholics in the country increased dramatically, covering all classes of people, scholars, and relatives of the emperor.
At the same time, Western science and technology were introduced to China along with Catholicism, and Chinese culture was brought to the West by missionaries.
When Matteo Ricci first arrived in Beijing, he lived in a hotel dedicated to foreign envoys, and was later allowed to live in a private house in the city for a long time, and was allowed to carry out missionary activities.
Matteo Ricci chose a plot of land within the Xuanwu Gate, where he built a church, which is known as the South Church, the oldest Catholic church in Beijing.
After Matteo Ricci established the South Church, an exhibition of Western books and scientific instruments was held in the church, which attracted a large number of officials and Confucian scholars, thus expanding the influence of Catholicism among scholars.
In 1607, Matteo Ricci collaborated with Xu Guangqi to publish the first six translations of Euclid's Geometrical Primitives.
In 1608, he printed the Ten Essays on Freaks and began compiling his historical work, The History of the Christian Expedition to China.
On May 11, 1610 (the thirty-eighth year of Wanli), he died of illness in Beijing at the age of 59.
In 1611, the Wanli Emperor gave Matteo Ricci to be buried in the Tenggong fence in Erligou outside the Pingze Gate. According to the practice at the time, Western missionaries were supposed to be buried in Macao after their deaths, but under the mediation of the cabinet chief Ye Xiang Gao, the Wanli Emperor made an exception and allowed Matteo Ricci to be buried in the Tenggong fence in the western suburbs of Beijing, making him the first Western missionary to be buried in Beijing. That's a very high standard of treatment.
Wei Bao was very excited after listening to Jinnige tell the story of Matteo Ricci's step-by-step success in the Ming Dynasty!
Compared with these Western studies of foreigners, Wei Bao feels that his knowledge is not exaggerated, at least the writing of later generations is much more in line with this time, right? Foreigners can even spread foreign languages, so what is the difficulty in popularizing his education?
Moreover, in fact, the three-year primary school, two-year junior high school, and two-year high school compulsory education system implemented by Wei Bao in Weijiazhuang is quite successful.
At present, the literacy rate in Weijiazhuang has reached more than 80 percent, except for many elderly people, there is really not much need for forced literacy. All others, male and female, no matter how young, are subject to compulsory education.
Webbo has always put education first!
The world is the world of people, people are more effective than any weapon, and there is great power in numbers! As long as the food can be fed, the more people, the better!
These are Weibao's insights.
The methods of education and dissemination that the missionaries have continuously explored and summarized have also been recognized by Wei Bao.
But Wei Bao also has a knot, that is, Wei Bao believes in Buddhism, and the vast majority of Chinese people believe in Buddhism, which is the result of the continuous strengthening of the Tang, Song, Yuan, and Ming dynasties.
Although Wei Bao does not reject Catholicism, he does not hope to introduce these people to supplement the education system of Weijiazhuang, so that Catholicism can develop rapidly in his subordinate areas!
In order to upgrade the education system of Weijiazhuang, it is necessary to supplement these ready-made people who already have a very clear basic modern scientific concept!
After Wei Bao euphemistically expressed his intention to let these missionaries go to Weijiazhuang.
The missionaries have concerns, too!
They hope to get the support of the Ming Emperor more than the support of a local tycoon, although Wei Bao has made it clear that he will give them preferential treatment, but Wei Bao is not an official, can not represent the Ming court, these missionaries in their private hearts, there is still a desire to be an official, want to gain social status in the Ming Kingdom.
It is troublesome to cooperate with both sides with selfish intentions.
After testing the other party's thoughts, Wei Bao did not rush to continue the topic, but still emphasized that everyone should be good friends, and no matter what, he was willing to support their idea of translating more than 7,000 of the most advanced scientific books in Europe.
The meal was quite enjoyable, and then Wei Bao insisted on sending the missionaries back to their place of residence, the south church of the church.
Major missionary scientists such as Jinnige, Deng Yuhan, Long Huamin, Luo Yagu, Fu Fanji, and Tang Ruowang also personally accompanied Wei Bao to visit the library of Nantang Cathedral.
Jinnige didn't brag, they really collected nearly a dozen books, and about one-third of them went out, and there were six or seven thousand books on science!
At two or three o'clock in the evening, everyone was still full of interest, Wu Xuexia was already sleepy, but she insisted on refusing to go, and fell asleep in the carriage alone.
Through the conversation, Wei Bao learned that Jinnige is very knowledgeable and proficient in all aspects of subject knowledge.
Deng Yuhan is biased towards astronomy and geography.
Long Huamin is biased towards chemical and pharmaceutical aspects.
Luo Ya Gu and Fu Fanji also know a lot about chemistry, geology and metallurgy!
These make Wei Bao very excited!
Seeing that Wei Bao seemed to be particularly interested in Western firearms, Jinnige also gave Wei Bao a book he had collected and compiled on making cannons, "The Secret of Fire Attack"!
Principles and technologies such as cannon casting, manufacturing, storage, transportation, and performance, as well as gunpowder preparation and shell manufacturing, "The Secret of Fire Attack" was an authoritative work that introduced Western musket technology at that time.
"Thank you very much Mr. Wei Bao for being willing to donate to us, it's not that we don't want to go with Wei Gongzi, it's really that we've lived here for a long time, I have a lot of friends, and I'm used to life here, and I don't really want to change the environment, and besides, Mr. Wei Bao, you see I'm already so old, I don't have a few years to live, and I'm about to go to see God's people, I really don't want to move again." Jinnige was embarrassed and said to Wei Bao: "Please forgive Mr. Wei Bao." This book is already the most advanced book on firearms production in Europe, and I hope Mr. Wei Bao likes it. ”
"Thank you, Mr. Kinniko and gentlemen, I like it very much." Wei Bao accepted the book very politely, and said: "Mr. Jinnige and all gentlemen don't have to feel guilty, everyone has a habit problem, and after living in one place for a long time, it is inevitable to have feelings. However, I still hope that everyone will seriously consider coming with me to Weijiazhuang! I can guarantee that you will get more than you can get in the capital! The position can be the highest governor of a province! The wealth is countless, and tens of thousands of taels of gold a year are nothing! Don't think that my Weijiazhuang sounds like a small village, in fact, Weijiazhuang already has a population of five million! Not much less than the population of the whole of Europe! The territory is bigger than the five France combined! ”
Wei Bao was a little suspicious of bragging, but he didn't brag too outrageously, and completed the migration of the Liao people, Weijiazhuang plus Liaonan, is really not much smaller than five France, although the population of five million is somewhat exaggerated, four million is about the same!
Speaking, Wei Bao clearly pointed out the scope of his control with his hand on a Chinese map in the library.
A bunch of missionaries thought it was incredible! I didn't expect Wei Bao, as an ordinary person, to be able to control such a large population and such a large territory?
Wei Bao briefly talked about the situation in the border area, and then talked about his cooperative relationship with Mao Wenlong, "These are very high-level secrets, I hope you don't go around telling them." ”
The missionaries were politically minded people, and they immediately said that they would never talk nonsense.
At the same time, many people are really starting to be tempted, living in the capital, of course, there is a chance to be hired by the Ming court, but that has to wait until the Year of the Monkey Ma Yue?
"Okay, don't disturb everyone's rest, if you keep talking, it's going to be dawn." Wei Bao smiled slightly.
Jinnige and the others said that it was too late, and asked Wei Bao and the others to rest in the South Hall, which had enough rooms to entertain them.
Wei Bao declined their kindness, saying that he had high requirements for accommodation, and the non-golden silk nanmu was soft and collapsed, and he couldn't sleep on it, so he changed his direction and pretended to be ***, secretly scolding these missionaries that their knowledge was still not enough, and how many could they have pursued the official positions and salaries that the Ming court could give them? Only by following yourself can you have a future, and you can see what is the real luxury!
At the same time, Wei Bao also had no choice but to admit the power of the orthodox court and the power of the official! Whether it is a big family in Liaoxi and Liaodong, or a foreign tyrant like Mao Wenlong, or these foreign devils, everyone recognizes the official, and everyone recognizes the orthodoxy of the Ming court.
Whoever has mastered the golden seal is the one who speaks of the Ming Dynasty!
When a group of missionaries heard this, they naturally understood what Wei Bao meant, but no one was in a hurry to express their position, and everyone was a little embarrassed.
After Wei Bao smiled slightly, he was about to leave, and the missionaries sent Wei Bao out very enthusiastically.
The two sides said goodbye politely again and again, and Wei Bao left the scope of the Nantang Cathedral.
Wei Bao glanced at Wu Xuexia and Xiang'er, who were asleep in the carriage.
Wang Qiuya didn't fall asleep, she kept waiting for Wei Bao and asked Wei Bao to get in the car.
Wei Bao said: "You stay in the car, I want to walk by myself." ”
Wei Bao said, caressed the tome given by Jinni Pavilion in his hand, which was as thick as the bricks of the city gate, and then handed it over to Wang Qiuya for safekeeping.
Although books are good books, Wei Bao values talents more and is the person who writes books!
Even without these books, Wei Bao believes that with his ability, he really has to lead the people of the Heaven and Earth Academy of Sciences to research and develop day and night, and when he has his own steel industry, it is not difficult to develop cannon technology far beyond this era!
Before the 18th century, the cannon technology that had developed to the peak was not still a front-loading rifled gun, an ordinary artillery, basically no distance, and it had to rely on faith to hit accurately, what is the use?
Even in the middle of the 19th century, it was still a row of musketeers, a simple line of artillery arrays, and the exchange of fire between the great powers was completely based on firepower and human life.
It was only in the late 19th century that positional warfare, trench warfare, slowly developed! Before the First World War, it was already the twentieth century, and the thermal weapons war began to escalate, and the advent of various thermal weapons began to drive the rapid development of science and technology.
Industrial development can only lay the foundation for science and technology, and it is still necessary to rely on large-scale war to really make science and technology upgrade rapidly and make drastic changes in the whole era! It depends on the contest of overall national strength! It depends on the mobilization of the whole people!
A war can decide whether the people of this country will be masters or slaves, can all the people in this country not be excited and fighting?
Even if most people do not have a state or a concept of nation, a small group of upper-class aristocrats, the big bourgeoisie, and the big landlord class will try their best to develop a wave.
What the hell did you see the end of the Qing Dynasty decay into?
Lafayette also knew to ask Li Hongzhang to get a Beiyang fleet out.
Survival and development are the eternal themes of mankind.
