If you are disgusted with a certain behavior of your subordinates towards you, do not treat your superiors with such behavior of your subordinates; If you are disgusted by what others have done to you in the past, don't treat them with that behavior. If you are disgusted by someone else's behavior behind your back, don't treat them with that behavior; If you hate the people on your right for making things difficult for you, don't use this behavior to make things difficult for those on your left. If you are disgusted with the accusations and grievances of the people on your left, then you should not blame or complain against the people on your right. It's called the 'Way of Perfection.'"

Zeng Zi interpreted: "The Book of Songs says: 'When the Yin Dynasty did not lose the hearts of the people, it was still able to meet the requirements of heaven. That is to say, if you win the hearts and minds of the people, you will get the country, and if you lose the hearts of the people, you will lose the country.
Therefore, people with high moral character first pay attention to cultivating virtue. Only with virtue can there be support, only with support can land be kept, land can be wealthed, and wealth can be supplied and used. Virtue is the foundation, and wealth is the branch. If you regard the root as an external thing, but the branch as the inner root, then you will compete with the common people for interests. Therefore, if the king gathers wealth and goods, the people's hearts will be lost; When the king scatters his wealth among the people, the hearts of the people will be gathered together. This is just as if you speak unreasonably, people will answer you with unreasonable words; The source of the goods is unknown, and one day it will be lost without explanation. ”
