Chapter 24: Whitehall 2
The Rolls-Royce Phantom crosses the Millennium Bridge, and Finch looks out the window at the London Eye by the River Thames, a little distracted.
The car phone rang suddenly, and Finch woke up from his contemplation, grabbed the phone, and before he could speak, he heard a violent explosion from the microphone, followed by a slightly panicked scream, and it was clear that the situation was extremely critical.
"Doctor, where are our reinforcements!? I can't hold it here......"
"Falcon, things have changed a little...... Finch licked his lips and said, "There is some trouble on the British side, they have ten soldiers and a guide who were taken captive by the rebels on the outskirts of Freetown, and now the SAS and the paratrooper are busy deploying to rescue ......"
"Dr. Holy-cow! Just tell me there are no reinforcements now? There are a dozen guards and a 'divine servant' here......"
Hayabusa was clearly in no mood to talk nonsense with him, and the phone was hung up, and a busy beep came over.
"Ugh......" Finch shook his head and put the microphone back on the cradle, "Chavez, you see, I'm not done yet...... What is he anxious about. ”
Chavez held the steering wheel, glanced at the rearview mirror in the car, and smiled: "Hayabusa is on a field mission for the first time, so I guess I'm a little nervous." ”
The car enters Westminster and turns from Trafall Square onto Whitehall Street and stops in front of Gate 2. Whitehall Street is the center of the British executive branch, just across the street from Downing Street, where the Prime Minister is headquartered, and Whitehall 2 is a Victorian-style building.
Finch didn't enter through the door, but went around to a small door on the side and raised his hand to knock.
The small window on the door was pulled open, and a pair of vigilant eyes appeared inside the door.
"Who are you looking for?"
"Is Mr. C here?"
The small window was closed, and a pull on the deadbolt was heard.
Squeak –
The thick door opened, and Finch politely removed the gentleman's hat from his head and nodded to the dot inside.
Inside the door were two large men with strong physiques and bright eyes, and at a glance they knew that they had been specially trained. Security is tight on the rooftops and corridors of the building.
It's not the first time Vinci has been here, and he knows exactly what this place is. Before 1919, the headquarters of MI6 was located here, and then moved to a new office building on the south bank of the River Thames, but in fact Whitehall 2 retains a huge office that can be accessed through a nondescript side door without a front door, and is not connected to the rest of the building.
The code word for opening the door is "Mr. C", which is actually the code name of Sir Mansfield Cumming, the most famous director in MI6 history, which is the same as the director in the later 007 series of novels who only replaced it with the letter M, which is the consistent style of MI6.
"I'd like to see Baron Harvey." Finch gets straight to the point and explains what he meant.
Two strong men came up and searched Finch up and down to make sure there were no offensive weapons, and then pressed a button on a nearby welcome stand.
"Mr. Baron, a man named Finch has come looking for you."
Finch turned his face to a small hole in the door, where there was a hidden camera on the wall that was linked to the computer system in the baron's office.
Baron Harvey apparently saw the visitor clearly in his office, and the intercom system on the wall soon heard a voice: "Oh! It's Finch! What a rarity! ”
Then he ordered two of his men: "James, please come up to Mr. Finch." ”
Led by James, Finch went up to the second floor. The environment was very spacious, but the corridors in the corridors were so dazzling that Finch remembered the first time he came here, and if Harvey hadn't led the way, it would have been easy to get lost in the messy corridors and countless rooms.
After turning an unknown number of corners, there was a small staircase, and a corridor with closed doors on both sides.
James led Finch to the door of the end room, typed the numbers on the coded door, and the door opened, empty without a table. He reached out and pressed the button of a light switch by the wall, then walked over to another switch and pressed it.
"Please." He made a gesture of please and led Finch out of the room.
One of the walls at the end of the corridor had receded to either side, and another corridor had reappeared.
"You MI6 just like to play tricks." Finch said, ""
Finally arrived at Baron Harvey's office, knocked on the door, and the strong man opened the door for Fincher, and he stood guard outside the door.
"My dear Finch, what wind brought you from America?" Harvey stepped out from behind a quaint ebony desk piled high with papers, opened his arms, and politely greeted Finch with a traditional English veneer.
Seeing Finch's strange expression, Harvey smiled, "It seems that you don't like veneers very much." ”
Finch smiled wryly, "If you compare it to a handshake, maybe it is." ”
Harvey invited Finch to sit down, poured him black tea, and said, "Studies have shown that veneers are more hygienic than shaking hands......
Finch had something on his mind, but now he came here to ask Harvey, so he had to be patient and listen to him talk to himself.
Seeing that Finch was absent-minded, Baron Harvey poured tea and sat down on the antique sofa, took off his glasses, looked at Finch while wiping and asked, "I don't think you're here to catch up on the old days when you came to visit so late." ”
"It's not a reminiscence, I have something I want you to help with." Finch took a sip of black tea, nodded and said, "My people are currently in a little trouble in Sierra Leone, I have contacted your Ministry of Defense, and they promised me to send a paratrooper regiment of the 16th Air Assault Brigade stationed in Freetown and the SAS tactical group operating there to help, but something went wrong......
Harvey put his glasses back on, his eyes shining behind the lenses: "Is it because of the capture of the soldiers of the Irish Regiment?" ”
Finch smiled wryly, "I can't hide anything from you, the head of the agent." ”
Harvey laughed to himself: "I'm already retired, and now I don't hold any position in MI6, so you don't have to compliment me so much." Besides, you mysterious organizations are usually airtight, and there are many things we don't know. For example, I didn't know beforehand that your 'Sky Canopy' had also sent people to Sierra Leone. ”
Finch could hear the blame in Harvey's tone, and he knew very well that Harvey, as the veteran of MI6, even though he is nominally retired now, is actually a figure in MI6 who turns his hands into clouds and rains. MI6 has always had a tradition that even when a new supervisor is responsible for the work on the surface, there is still a shadow leader behind the scenes, whose authority is even above the supervisor.
This is a rule that has been established since Cumming, the British "father of intelligence" who created MI6, and after the relocation of MI6 in 1919, Whitehall 2 has remained as a symbol, and no one knows that it is still the highest command center of MI6.
And Baron Harvey is the brain on this center.
Finch speculated that Harvey was even monitoring his "Skydome" company and the Moria Presbyterian Church's every move, and the war with the Atlantean Restoration Order kept these humans of different bloodlines on their toes, which was a sense of alienation that could not be reconciled.
"I'm sorry I didn't know you before, because the fewer people who know about this matter, the better, even in the beginning, we didn't show up in the name of the 'Skydope' company, but just commissioned an intermediary to find the local natives, and then hired an independent contractor to take care of the security, until things progressed, I sent three people over."
Harvey asked curiously, "If the secrecy work is so good, why are you still in trouble?" ”
Finch was silent for a moment, then said, "I think you are well aware that the Atlanteans also possess fragments of the ancient 'Chip' ancient books, and perhaps they have found some way to predict the gods left by their ancestors on the continent. ”
Harvey picked up the teacup and leaned back on the couch, his eyes as sharp as a falcon, as if he wanted to see through Vinci's thoughts. You know, the mild-mannered-looking and well-mannered Dr. Finch in front of him is not trivial, and for so many years, intelligence agencies and official organizations of various governments have been monitoring their every move.
In the past, I was always in a passive situation. But at this moment and then, now that the initiative is obviously in his own hands, he feels full of certainty.
"Before I grant your request, I will only make one request - what is there in Sierra Leone?"
