Chapter 21: Intuition and Preparation
The prince looked at the queen with a frown, and listened to her words quietly, until after the queen finished speaking, he was still thinking for a while, considering the deep meaning of his wife's words.
He knew that his wife was rightβin the present situation, Louis Bonaparte, who had just usurped the country and had not yet secured it, needed more support and recognition from outside.
And now, in the whole of Europe, and indeed in the whole world, what other country speaks more weightily than the British?
"I see what you mean, my dear. In that sense, Louis Bonaparte must have wanted our public support, and he would have been willing to pay a price for it. After a moment of silence, the prince put his hand on his chin, "So...... Are you saying we don't have to be too eager for this Trevile, he'll take the initiative to post it himself? β
"We shouldn't be in a hurry, he came here with all his hard work, and he definitely didn't come here to see the scenery...... The closer we got, the more he felt that he could get a little more out of us, so the less positive he became. The queen replied as if she had taken it for granted, "I can see that he is cunning and greedy, and if you are not careful, he may have to take everything out of his pocket." β
"So, you mean, Trevier deliberately kept his distance from us, and we followed his wishes and were equally cold? Or at least the table is less zealous? At last the Prince understood what the Queen meant, "Even if it is because of pressure from Bonaparte." He also had to bow down to us again......"
"Yes, that's it." The queen nodded slightly. "Actually, I think so. The reason why this young man was so close to us was that he really wanted to come to terms with usβand because he wanted to, he deliberately feigned coldness to avoid being held in our hands. β
"Wow!" After hearing his wife's judgment, the prince suddenly had a sudden sense of enlightenment, "You mean this bastard is deliberately hanging our appetite?" In fact, more than anyone else, he hopes to come up with some achievements and go back to ask for credit from his master? β
"Isn't that so?" The queen asked with a smile.
The prince frowned, as if contemplating the conversation he had just had with Treville.
"This bastard boy is really cunning!" A moment later, he cursed again.
"You can't say that about people. People are just doing what they have to do. The queen smiled and blinked, "Well, don't take my word for it, I'm just guessing by intuition, and I don't know if I'm sure of it!" β
"No, I think you have a point, dear." The prince waved his hand and motioned to his wife not to be modest, "It's been so many years. You see, there seems to be no time when people are not accurate. β
The prince's words were not deliberately flattering, in fact, although he usually did not seem to be very interested in national affairs, nor did he like tedious and trivial affairs. But the prince knew that the Queen's mind was much clearer than anyone could see on the surface. At least. This intuition is rarely inaccurate.
"Oops. At this time, you will please people, why did you have a cold face in front of them just now? "Because I was praised by my husband. So the queen's face flushed slightly, and then she glanced at her husband with some dissatisfaction, "If only you were willing to have half of Treville's oily tone, what does it mean that Pinsuri is always so strict...... Look how lovely these French people are! β
"Hmph, he's not just oily, these French people all like to mess with flowers, you don't know." Because his wife praised others in front of him, the prince shook his head a little disappreciatively, "so the French cannot be trusted, they always have only a few minutes of enthusiasm." Even if we reach a tacit agreement today, maybe one day they will change their ways. β
"Isn't that the case with us in England? We are not the same as we are going to leave this group of French people behind if necessary. The queen raised her eyebrows, as if to defend the lovely young man, "Then again, I don't think Monsieur Treville is like the average Frenchman. A person like him looks polite, but he is ruthless in his heart, and he can do anything in a hurry. β
"I agree with that, judging from the reports that came from France, he has always acted unscrupulously, never taking his superiors or any standards into account." The Prince nodded in agreement with his wife, "However, it is a good thing for me that he recognizes strength without regard to principle - as long as he respects strength, he knows what a great luck it is to have our goodwill...... I'll let him understand that. I don't believe he can do anything to us. β
The Prince's attitude, the Queen did not refute.
The couple, however, had enough confidence in the strength and deterrence of their empire.
"Mr. Russell will be over tomorrow, and Mr. Palmerston will be over, and then they will be able to weigh Mr. TrΓ©ville together." The prince whispered with an inexplicable comfort, "If you speak like this, he will have to sit on pins and needles at that time, these two are not so easy to deal with." β
This Mr. Palmerston is the current British Foreign Secretary, and he is also a well-known figure.
When she heard her husband mention the name Palmerston, the queen frowned slightly, obviously not very happy with the man.
"Mr. Palmerston, you should have something to talk to our lovely Charles." After a moment, she said calmly, in an attitude that she couldn't tell whether it was good or bad, "I think the two of them are quite similar." β
"I think too, both of them are unprincipled, selfish and snobbish, and ...... are all promiscuous. The Prince nodded, evidently agreeing with the Queen, "Well, my dear, I don't like Palmerston either, but...... Sometimes we have to learn to tolerate people we don't like. Besides, we don't have to put up with him for long, let's let him crush Trevill first. β
"Your business, whatever you do, I don't bother to take care of it......" Her Majesty shrugged. I hope you don't get too unkind to our guests. β
Then, her face regained the happy smile that she had just taken to Charlotte to her heart, "Okay, don't tell me this kind of trouble, I'm too lazy to listen." Tomorrow I'm going out of town with Madame Treville, and you can do whatever you want, for you're always happy to do things like that......"
"We enjoy it so you don't have to worry about it." The prince replied with the same smile.
β¦β¦β¦β¦β¦β¦β¦β¦
After lunch, Charles took Charlotte back to his room.
Because of the fatigue of the previous journey, coupled with the tiredness peculiar to people after the meal, the two of them quickly hugged each other and slept for a nap.
It was only in the evening that the two of them slowly woke up.
They then learned from their attendants that the French ambassador to England had requested to come to the palace to meet them.
When Her Majesty decided to invite the Trevilles to stay at Buckingham Palace, she sent someone to inform the French Embassy, and after hearing the Ambassador's request to come and meet him, she magnanimously agreed to the Ambassador's request.
When the ambassador arrived at the palace, the queen and his wife received the ambassador and talked with him for a long time, and only after Charles had rested did they send their attendants to inform him of the news.
When Charles heard this, he immediately rearranged his clothes and ran to the reception room to meet the long-awaited ambassador, Count de Roncroll, and other embassy staff.
As soon as he saw the Count, he enthusiastically extended his hand.
"Monsieur de Longcroll, I'm very sorry to have you change your itinerary, I didn't know until I came to England that Her Majesty had played such a joke on me!"
"It's a very encouraging joke, Monsieur de Treville." The tall and lanky Count bowed to Charles, and then shook Charles' hand, "Her Majesty the Queen is not so enthusiastic about everyone, and it is good news for you, for us, and for France to be able to receive such courtesy." β
"It's kind of nice to be able to say that." Charles smiled and nodded, then motioned for him to sit down with him.
The ambassador to Britain is arguably one of the most important positions in French diplomatic circles, and even in view of his official position in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he should maintain a relationship with which he is at least passable.
Although Charles was very polite, the ambassador remained unmoved, and only politely followed Charles's instructions.
, it can be seen that he is the kind of person who does not take his feelings lightly, but he is not disrespectful to Charles.
"Mr. Treville, let's get down to business." As soon as he sat down, he said directly to Charles, "I have been talking with the Queen and her husband for a while, and I know from them that they have a very good impression of you and your wife, and that they are very friendly to France. β
"Well, I had that impression when I had lunch with them just now." Charles nodded, "They have a good opinion of France, and they don't reject the current government. β
"Sir, since we have made such a good first impression, we should not squander it." The ambassador solemnly said, "Next, please act according to our instructions, and we will further expand the benefits we can derive from this favor." β
Well?
What does that mean?
He was probably worried that he would lose his honor in front of the queen and his wife, which would disgust them, and then affect the most important Anglo-French relationship.
The real problem, though, isn't here.
What he is even more worried about is that he has taken the first credit for "greatly improving Franco-British relations" into his arms...... (To be continued......)
