Chapter 596: The Story of the New Cannon

In the original history, the "Kentucky Second Volunteer Cavalry Regiment" under the command of this brigadier general was equipped with a total of two 10-kilogram mountain grenades, and this kind of artillery was very active in guerrilla warfare.

The soldiers also loved this light gun, and gave it the nickname "Little Bulldog".

Another example is Major Mosby, the famous Ranger commander of the Confederate Army, who has repeatedly fought deep behind enemy lines. In the course of those battles, he used mountain grenades to bombard the trains and transport convoys of the Northern Army.

In some western wildernesses with extremely complex terrain and lack of roads, when fighting with the Indians, this 10-pound mountain howitzer played a huge role.

History books clearly record that on November 25, 1864, in Texas, General Carson led 400 men and fought against 1,000 Indian Comanche tribesmen.

At that time, Carson had two 10-pound mountain grenades, and in order to avoid the Comanche bullets, the gunners loaded ammunition behind a small sand dune, and then pushed them to the top of the dune to aim and fire.

The huge recoil after the cannon is fired will push the cannon back to the bottom of the dune, and sometimes, it may simply roll under the foot of the dune, but even if it falls out like this, the cannon is not damaged, and after the artillerymen turn the cannon over, they find that it is still usable, and Carson is like this, relying on these two guns to repel the Comanche attack.

This example fully demonstrates the lightness and durability of mountain grenades.

This is also the fundamental reason why Chen Xin imitated this artillery. In the vast Liaodong region, there are many plains, which can maximize the power of the rifled 150mm heavy artillery of the Huaxia Army.

However, in Liaodong, there are still hills, mountains, and woodlands in more places. Moreover, the 150mm heavy artillery is too heavy and the rate of fire is too fast, and with the current logistics capability of the Huaxia Army, it is really impossible to completely integrate this expensive weapon into the combat mode of the Huaxia Army.

And these "old-fashioned" artillery pieces are very suitable for the Huaxia Army after the large-scale expansion of the army.

At the beginning, Chen Xin also specialized in studying the military establishment of those armed with 10 kilograms of mountain howitzers at the same time, and in the establishment of the regular army, six mountain grenades would be organized into an artillery company.

This artillery battery is generally equipped with 33 mules, which can carry all the guns, a spare gun mount, various artillery equipment and 288 shells.

But in fact, at that time, the army was often short and could not achieve the establishment on paper, and often, only four guns would be organized into an artillery company, and sometimes, the artillery company would even be split and a single gun would be allocated to other troops.

At that time, many mountain grenades were allocated to cavalry units, and only a small part were distributed to infantry units. Some cavalry regiments even had special cavalry artillery companies, and the gunners of the cavalry artillery companies were drawn from each cavalry company.

Because these mountain grenades were always carried by mules, artillery batteries equipped with mountain grenades were sometimes called "donkey" artillerymen.

If the terrain allows, the whole door can be hung on the back of a trailer and pulled away by a mule.

The first mule at the head carries the gun, the second mule carries the gun carriage and wheels, and the last, the third, drags two ammunition boxes.

Between every two mules, the distance between the front and back is about two meters, and each mule can carry up to 230 catties to 270 catties of heavy loads.

These experiences that have been summed up in history have been well integrated by Chen Xin into the current artillery unit of the Huaxia Army.

In fact, artillery is a very particular branch of the army, not only the technology of firing artillery, but also the control of livestock, which is also a very deep knowledge.

For example, during the American Civil War, artillery cattle were mainly horses, mules, and cattle.

At that time, although the load capacity of mules was greater than that of horses, and at the same time, they were easier to maintain than horses, but under normal circumstances, field artillerymen would not use mules to pull artillery and ammunition vehicles.

Because under the bombardment of artillery fire, although the horse and the mule will panic, but the horse is usually only teasing the hooves at most, but the mule, on the other hand, will scream and roll constantly, and it is impossible to control it at all.

The reason why the 10-pound mountain howitzer is transported by mule is because in the hilly, mountainous and other terrain, the passing ability of the mule is far stronger than that of the horse, and in the battlefield of complex terrain, the mountain howitzer can use manpower to push the gun onto the line of fire, and then leave the mule in the rear to safety.

But if the artillerymen are unlucky, even if the mules are hidden, it will be of little use.

It's like in June 1862, during the Battle of Port Republic.

At that time, a mountain howitzer battery of the Southern Army was hiding in the valley, and at that time, they were in a very safe position, and the artillery fire of the Northern Army could not reach the place where they were hiding.

However, the mules did not think so, and the mere shrill sound of shells whizzing over their heads frightened the mules, who belonged to the artillery company, kept kicking, jumping, and rolling in the valley where they were hiding.

In that case, the artillery company was all out to try to control the situation, and in the end, it was not until the officer assigned three or four men to each mule that the situation was controlled.

The ammunition box issued by the Huaxia Army to the mountain howitzer is a long poplar wooden box, which is 84 cm long, 12 cm wide and 24 cm deep.

Usually inside one such ammunition box was eight shells, of which there were 2 grenades, 6 shrapnel and 1 shotgun. The empty weight of the box is 18 pounds, and when it is fully loaded, it weighs 100 pounds.

Although Huaxia has already planted rubber trees, it has not yet become a scale and cannot supply too much rubber, so the 10-pound mountain howitzer racks and wheels in Annan and other places are oak wood, and the axle is made of Cen wood.

This kind of ammunition box is specially made for loading, ordinary 10 catties of field artillery, that is, the main artillery on the fast crab, the ammunition box used is much more bulky than 10 catties of mountain grenades, its planks are up to 3cm thick, can be loaded with dozens of shells, and weighs 450 catties, can only be loaded on a trailer to be dragged by horses.

The 10-pound mountain howitzer that the Huaxia Army is now equipped with is generally equipped with 6 gunners, which is very different from the 8 or 9 gunners usually equipped with other large field artillery.

Each of these gunners has a different task, but each of them has to be trained in a different position, in order to take over the work of other gunners at critical moments.
