Section 26 Leaving in Disgrace (I)
After the Battle of Jeju Island, both Tang and Japan launched a powerful propaganda "offensive". Of course, the results of the campaigns advertised by the two countries were completely different.
On the Japanese side, the results advertised by its naval command (equivalent to the Imperial Navy Command) were that it sank three Tang Imperial aircraft carriers, two capital ships, five heavy cruisers, and more than a dozen other warships, achieved brilliant results, and forced the Tang Imperial Navy to withdraw from the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea. The main content of this propaganda is definitely false, in fact, the Fifth Fleet of the Tang Empire has not lost a single battleship, but the latter half is indeed true, and it is unlikely that the Fifth Fleet will continue to attack.
The Tang Empire also launched a powerful propaganda machine, and the results announced by the Imperial Prime Minister Xue Xiyue himself were: sinking three Japanese fleet aircraft carriers, three capital ships, and more than a dozen other warships, and removing the threat to Jeju Island, forcing the Japanese side to postpone the landing operation plan on Jeju Island. The main part of this result was also fictional, and the actual result was that all three Japanese aircraft carriers were only heavily damaged, and finally the "Akagi" returned to the port of Nagasaki. However, the latter half is also true. Because the Japanese Southwest Combined Fleet was heavily damaged, the Japanese Navy could not ensure sea supremacy in the landing operation, and the Tang Empire had already reinforced its forces to Jeju Island, and the landing operation plan against Jeju Island was postponed.
The scale of this battle was not large, but it had a huge impact on the naval battles that followed. This was the first battle between aircraft carriers, and the escort warships of the two warring sides did not have the opportunity to bombard each other with their main guns from beginning to end, and the attack weapons of both sides were combat aircraft. In addition, this naval battle actually proved several problems. First, the powerful striking power of the aircraft carrier is beyond doubt, and second, the aircraft carrier's air defense configuration of the warring sides, especially the performance of the anti-aircraft artillery, is problematic. Third, the performance of aircraft carriers needs to be improved, and the quality of pilots also needs to be improved. Finally, it was the Tang Imperial fleet that had a big problem in terms of anti-submarine and anti-submarine defense.
Obviously, the results of this operation were of great significance for future naval warfare, and at the same time led to a large-scale reform of the establishment of naval fleets and the command system of the fleets in both countries. The Tang Empire abolished the traditional system of large fleets, and the biggest change was the Japanese navy. After this naval battle, the Japanese Navy changed the organization of the four major fleets, established the Combined Fleet Command, raised the Combined Fleet Command above all fleets, and established several capital ship fleets on the basis of them, as well as the 1st and 11th Air Fleets, and independently organized aircraft carriers to give full play to the striking power of aircraft carriers.
Of course, the lessons learned from this naval battle and the ways in which they improved the problems that were exposed were different. However, there is one thing in common, and that is that the conservatives of both navies have a new excuse, which has actually led to the fact that the position of aircraft carrier tactics in both navies has suffered. And the reason for this result is simple, neither side of the carrier-based aircraft forces were able to sink the other carrier's aircraft carrier, and the losses were heavy, so that the "anti-carrier" theorists found a reason. Obviously, this is a point of view that does not respect the actual results. Although neither side's bombers sank the other's aircraft carriers in the naval battle, the reason was not that the bombers were not powerful enough to carry ammunition, but other factors. For example, the intelligence was not timely (the main problem of the Japanese fleet), and the second was that the quality of the pilots was not high enough (the main problem of the fleet of the Tang Empire). If all these problems are solved, then the combat effectiveness of the carrier-based aircraft units will be greatly enhanced. It will not be long before the combat effectiveness of aircraft carriers will be demonstrated, but under the circumstances of the time, the idea of "anti-aircraft carriers" has a tendency to rise in the navies of both countries.
The impact of the naval battle was something Tan Renhao didn't want to see, but he was in a coma at the time, so he didn't see it. In addition to Lei Shaoqing, Hao Dongjue, Chang Jianxin and other comrades-in-arms, Liao Hanxiang, Wu Xianyu and Ji Xiaobin and other generals, as well as Marshal Sajiting, I am afraid that Liao Yingyu is the most worried. She even made a special trip from Chengdu to Zhoushan, and then stayed by Tan Renhao's bedside, waiting for Tan Renhao to wake up from a coma. However, even the doctor was not sure that Tan Renhao would wake up. In the two violent impacts, Tan Renhao's brain was hit hard, and it was a blessing that he was not dead or disabled, and whether he could wake up or not, no one could give a positive answer.
"Taizu" struggled to return to the port of Zhoushan on the fifth day after the end of the naval battle. At this time, the water intake of the aircraft carrier has already reached 5500 tons. The officers and men on the battleship threw almost everything that was "useless" into the sea, even discharging half of the fuel and all the ammunition, and all the fighters that had no way to take off. In the end, the officers and men of the aircraft carrier's electromechanical department repaired the two generators, and the damage management personnel finally repaired the two most important watertight doors. As a result, the speed of the aircraft carrier's water intake was controlled, and the doom of sinking was avoided. However, the heavily damaged aircraft carrier can only simply treat the "wounds" on its hull in the dock of Zhoushan Port, and then it will be sent back to the Jiangnan Shipyard for extensive repairs, and it may take several months to restore its combat effectiveness.
After the end of the naval battle, Prime Minister Xue Xiyue personally commended the Fifth Fleet and awarded the Fifth Fleet a collective first-class meritorious service, all the officers and men of the fleet were rewarded, the wounded officers and men were well cared for, and the families of the fallen officers and men received a generous pension. Commander Wu Xianyu, Chief of Staff Ji Xiaobin, Chief of Staff Tan Renhao Aviation Operations, as well as Colonel Luo Jinming, Major Zhang Naiding, Major Deng Zichao and others were all commended to varying degrees. However, these rewards are for outsiders to see, and if people want to believe the results announced by Prime Minister Xue Xiyue, then it is necessary to give some rewards. However, this was only a superficial reward, and in reality, the final result of the Fifth Fleet did not change Satietin's embarrassing position in the navy.
An important reason was that the aircraft carrier "Taizu" of the Fifth Fleet was heavily damaged, and the Fifth Air Wing lost one-third of its excellent pilots, making it almost impossible for the Fifth Air Wing to participate in the battle in a short period of time. However, the pressure and accusations received by the two are absolutely unfair!
