The new aviation torpedoes are much more advanced than the "Tigerfish" torpedoes currently used by naval aviation. This aviation armor-piercing projectile weighing 500 kg was loaded with 150 kg of high-explosive ZHA, thrown at an altitude of 500 meters, capable of penetrating horizontal armor 200 mm thick, and then exploding inside the hull for maximum destructive effect. Obviously, the performance of this bomb is also determined by the latest development and equipment of battleships of other powers, and there is no battleship in the world whose horizontal armor can withstand the attack of this bomb!
"We have conducted more than thirty tests of these munitions, and here is the test data sheet." The engineer in charge of the development is a middle-aged man about 50 years old, his name is Yin Hua, and he is the deputy chief engineer of the ammunition division of the arsenal. This is the outdoor experimental area of the arsenal, almost half of the hillside is the experimental site, there are dozens of targets, and there is a deep pool of water nearly 500 meters long under the hillside. The most conspicuous thing in the entire test site is the catapult. Catapults are used to catapult shells or bombs, so there is no need to use artillery to fire shells or planes to drop bombs.
A 250-kilogram armor-piercing projectile has been fixed to the catapult's movable slide. The catapult will be accelerated by a small rocket, and when the slider reaches the end of the trajectory where the catapult is slightly uplifted, the bomb fixed to it will fly out under the force of inertia and hit an armored steel plate more than 500 meters away. When the bomb hit the target, the speed reached about 200 meters per second, which was close to the speed at which the bomb was dropped from the dive bomber and hit the target.
"The thickness of the steel plate is one hundred and fifty millimeters." Yin Hua arrived very early, "It is a standard case-hardened armor steel plate for naval warships, and the surface hardness value has reached 35 to 38, do you want to check it?" ”
Tan Renhao went to measure the thickness of the steel plate, but the hardness value of the steel plate can only be tested in the laboratory, and he can only bring a fragment of the steel plate back after the experiment, and then find someone from the technical department to test it again.
The tests were very successful, the maximum armor-piercing thickness of the 250-kilogram armor-piercing projectile was designed to be 175 mm, and in the third test, the bomb even passed through a steel plate 180 mm thick, which already exceeded the basic requirements at the time of design. This was followed by tests of a 500-kilogram armor-piercing projectile, all of which were successful in three experiments, the third of which penetrated 235 mm of armor plate, while the maximum armor-piercing thickness for which it was designed was 220 mm.
The highlight was the tank experiment of the "Swordfish" torpedo. The method is to place the torpedo in a launch tube at one end of the tank, then activate its power system, and the torpedo will accelerate in a tank of 500 meters, which is the minimum range of this torpedo. By the time it hit the armor plate at the other end of the tank, its speed had already reached 35 knots. Of course, such experiments were incomplete, the "Swordfish" torpedo was an aviation torpedo, and there was no plan to develop a carrier-based version at that time (later, because of its excellent performance, the "Swordfish" torpedo with a strengthened power system began to be carried out on naval ships), and if the experiment was finalized in full accordance with the standards, it should be thrown into the water. However, there was no throwing equipment at the test site at that time, so it was only possible to measure its power in the same way as a shipborne torpedo, and the throwing test would be carried out by torpedo bombers in Jiaozhou Bay in the last test before the finalization.
The whole test was very successful, and the 250 kg * thunder head tore a large hole in the 150 mm thick armor steel plate with a diameter of more than three meters. According to the design specifications of the "Swordfish" torpedo, its maximum penetration reached 250 mm. However, at that time there was only one experimental torpedo, and whether it could penetrate 250 mm armor steel plates was completely determined by engineers and technicians through theoretical calculations.
"Mr. Yin, your design is very successful, I will hand in the report as soon as possible. So, when will the next experiment begin? ”
"In five days, we will conduct the final finalization experiment, and when the time comes, I will send someone to inform you in advance!"
