Section 196 On the Reward of Meritorious Deeds (I)
The street is illuminated by fires from buildings on both sides of the road. The team ran forward after the tanks, and our three commanders were in the middle of the whole team.
As I ran along the street for a while, I was surprised to find that the soldiers, both in front of me and behind me, were always in a square formation, not chaotic at all, and always running in order, and the sound of their steps was almost uniform, which actually drowned out the roar of the tank motors.
I didn't train the troops, but I knew what that meant. On the battlefield, only well-trained troops of the Ministry of Internal Affairs can reach such a level, and if they were replaced by other combat units, it is estimated that they would have run chaotically a long time ago.
Soon the troops ran to a crossroads, and in the middle of the road there was a burning tank, which, judging by its appearance, was none other than our T-34 tank. Scattered around the car were several corpses in black tank uniforms, presumably killed by German gunmen as they escaped from the destroyed tank.
The tank leading the way slowed down, cautiously trying to get around the left side of the burning tank. Although the tank slowed down, the running fighters did not slow down, they went around from the right side and ran in tandem with the tank. I was still a few steps away from the burning tank when I felt a wave of heat rushing towards me. I smiled wryly, I could feel such heat from such a distance, and if there were still people in the tank, it would probably be more than lucky.
Just as I was hesitating whether to go around the left or right side of the tank, I suddenly heard a sound like tearing linen coming from a distance. Before I could figure out what the familiar sound was, the warrior at the front of the line had already collapsed screaming. At the same time, someone next to me gave me a hard push, and I was caught off guard, staggering forward several steps, and then my feet slipped and fell heavily into the gap between the two tanks. The moment he fell to the ground, he heard a series of exclamations next to him: "Lie down, lie down!" Lie down, lie down! ……”
As I lay on the ground, I heard the shouts of the soldiers and the sound of gunfire like popping beans, and then I remembered that the sound of tearing linen I had just heard was from the German MG43 general-purpose machine gun. As soon as I looked up, I saw that the T-34 tank was making a turn, and when I saw the tracks that were getting closer and closer to me, I was so frightened that I quickly got up, took a few steps back, and squatted to the tail of the scrapped tank. It was a safe spot for me, and although I could feel the heat coming from time to time overhead, it was at least better than being run over by my own tank or killed by German bullets.
I cautiously poked my head out, and saw that the soldiers had already found shelter, and some of them, like me, were bent down and hid behind the tanks; Some crouched and hid behind the walls of roadside buildings, while others even lay directly on the ground, raising their guns and firing at the enemy. And the dozen or so fighters who were shot and fell to the ground just now, except for two or three who were rolling and moaning on the ground, the rest were lying there motionless, and it was estimated that they had died.
I looked left and right, trying to see where Major Durov and Captain Yushchenko were. At this moment, an object dragging white smoke flew over and plunged directly into the middle of the crowd. After the violent explosion, several soldiers flew into the air with their hands dancing in the light of the rising fire, and fell down screaming.
I cautiously peeked out of the corner to see that a few dozen meters away was a small church with two golden domes, and below the one on the left was the bell tower, from which the exploding object had flown in, and at this time, the German machine guns were still desperately firing at us.
The tank that had just turned had already finished turning, and fired a shot at the target. Perhaps the shot was too hasty, the gunner did not aim well, the shell hit the dome on the right, and after the debris was splashed, the enemy's machine gun continued to tilt deadly bullets at us.
Major Dulov bent over and ran quickly, crouched down beside me, and said loudly: "Comrade division commander, it's too dangerous here, hurry back to the command car!" ”
Although when I saw a few soldiers being bombed into the sky just now, I regretted in my heart that I should not have rushed to the city to kill heroes before the battle was over. Originally, I wanted to sneak to safety and wait for the battle to end, but when I heard Dulov say this, I felt that leaving at this moment would damage my image in the eyes of the soldiers, so I could only bite the bullet and say: "No, I'll stay here and watch you destroy the enemy." ”
"Comrade Division Commander! ......" Dulov was just about to persuade me again, but the sound of fire from the tank next to him interrupted his later words. The cannon hit the pillars of the bell tower directly, and the dust and smoke immediately surrounded the small space. After this explosion, the enemy's machine guns were also muted.
"Comrades! Rush with me! Captain Yushchenko, who had just been hiding somewhere, stood in the middle of the road with his pistol raised and shouted, and then rushed towards the church. The warriors rushed out of hiding, their weapons shouted and charged forward with their commanders. After two rounds of fire, the tank also slowly moved forward, closely following the fighters.
When the charging troops were still twenty or thirty meters away from the church, the fire point on the bell tower was revived, and several soldiers fell on their backs without even saying a word.
The elite is the elite, and the combat effectiveness of the troops of the Ministry of Internal Affairs is stronger than that of other units, and this can be seen from the reaction of the fighters. As soon as the German gunfire rang out, except for the few soldiers who had fallen, the rest of the people quickly dispersed, found a place to hide and fired back.
