Chapter 159: Half the Battle

Chapter 159 is half the battle

After nearly 30 hours of stubborn resistance, the ROK 6th Army announced its surrender

The surrender of the ROK 6th Army was completely expected by the outside world. In the face of the combat brigade, the long-range artillery brigade (the artillery brigade that accompanied the 54th Army to the south stopped advancing at Yingde to provide artillery support for the 38th Army), nearly 2,000 tactical fighters, and hundreds of heavy bombers, the 6th Army of the South Korean Army held out for nearly 30~ hours, which was a miracle.

Because there were still some South Korean troops who resisted stubbornly, the 38th Army was unable to move south on the morning of the 6th.

War always changes faster than planned.

Relying only on the 383rd Brigade and the 162nd Air Assault Brigade will definitely not be able to defeat Daegu, which is still defended by nearly 1C infantry divisions.

On the morning of the 6th, Pei Chengyi's deployment was adjusted, and the 151st Air Assault Brigade and the 1611th Air Assault Brigade immediately moved south to assist the 383rd Brigade in attacking Daegu, and the air force and naval aviation bombed Daegu in an all-round way.

The unparalleled maneuver of the Air Assault Brigade was thoroughly demonstrated.

With the ground forces deployed, the air assault brigade adjusted the pace of the offensive and changed the direction of the attack in just a few hours, spanning a distance of nearly 100 kilometers to participate in another battle.

At this point, the forces attacking Daegu were added to the brigade.

The doubling of troops did not fundamentally solve the problem of attacking Daegu: the lack of firepower and armor.

Daegu is 85 kilometers southeast of An. It is 95 meters away from Yingde. The artillery deployed in Yeongju (30 kilometers northeast of An) and Yeongdeok were unable to maneuver from the enemy's head and move forward as quickly as the air assault force did. As a result, it was not possible to provide artillery support for the ground forces attacking Daegu.

Actual combat has repeatedly proved that air crews cannot replace artillery at the bottom.

Although the Air Force and the Navy were all dispatched. Air assault brigade and ground helicopter gunships attacked with maximum intensity. But the lack of artillery support still had a very negative effect on the offensive. Encountered a strong firing point on the ground on the position of the South Korean army. The attacking forces either stopped and waited for air support. Either let direct fire (tanks and anti-tank guns) risk firing at close range. Because the bombing has a delay and a strong after-effect. So the experienced defenders would withdraw from their positions before the bombardment arrived. At the end of the bombardment, before the attacking troops rushed to the ground, they entered the position.

The lack of armor is also a serious problem.

The 383 Brigade is only an armored assault force. The main force is the mechanized infantry battalion. Not an armored battalion. Only 2 armored battalions in the brigade are equipped with tanks 112, which is only about half of the armored brigade. Tanks are definitely needed in an offensive battle, and no other armored weapon can replace them.

The battle soon fell into a stalemate. At around 11 o'clock, Pei Chengyi ordered the 383rd Brigade to stop the attack.

The casualties were not large, mainly because the South Korean army's firepower was too weak, and it was often possible to paralyze the attacking tanks and tanks in battle, but it was difficult to pose a threat to the personnel on the tanks and tanks. The 383rd Brigade used the ultra-low-altitude support provided by the Air Assault Brigade to rescue the trapped troops every time.

The loss of equipment was not significant, with more than 30 tanks and several infantry fighting vehicles destroyed in just one morning.

When the 383rd Armored Brigade stopped attacking, the 381st Armored Brigade moved down from Annannan, leaving the task of cleaning up the battlefield to the 382nd Armored Brigade. The artillery brigades stationed in Yeongju and Yingdeok also moved south as fast as possible, striving to reach Junwei and Ankang in the evening. Although these two sites are 55 kilometers and 55 kilometers away from Daegu respectively, they are still out of the range of ordinary artillery shells, but within the striking range of extended-range artillery shells, Pei Chengyi asked the newly formed Army Aviation Brigade to dispatch all of them to transport extended-range artillery shells for the artillery brigade.

The battle in Daegu came to an end for the time being, turning to Gyeongju.

Two "armored corps" against 22 infantry divisions were very different in strength, and the difference in armor and firepower was also very large.

Ling Yunxiao and Qu Maokang discussed tactics through the tactical communication system, and neither of them advocated passive defense but fought against the South Korean army. The problem is that there must be a force left behind to defend Gyeongju, and there will be a master and a secondary when attacking. After some controversy, the two finally reached an agreement, let the 17th Brigade of the Air Assault and the 172nd Unit of the Air Assault defend Gyeongju, put the South Korean army near Gyeongju, the 77th Army outflanked the South Korean army along the highway, and the 54th Army surrounded and annihilated the South Korean army with the main force.

Before dawn on the 6th, the vanguard of the ROK army reached the west of Gyeongju.

It was also at this time that the 7711 Brigade and the 772 Brigade arrived in Hayang, east of Daegu, by assaulting along the road. After leaving the fast anti-772, Ling Yunxiao led two fast anti-anti brigades to the south and captured Gyeongsan in the southeast of Daegu. As long as Gyeongsan is occupied, the 22 South Korean army divisions that are attacking Gyeongju will have no way to go to the sky and no way to go to the ground!

At 8:15 on the 6th, the 77th Army captured Gyeongsan.

At this point, 22 ROK infantry divisions were encircled in an area of about 3,000 square kilometers between Gyeongsan and Gyeongju. To the south and southwest is the upper valley of the Miryang River, the most downstream tributary of the Dongjiang River, to the southeast is Goxian Mountain, which is more than 1 meter above sea level, to the east is Gyeongju, where the low-altitude assault unit of the Air Assault Brigade is stationed, to the northeast is Ankang, where the 5411 Armored Brigade is stationed, to the north is the Ankang-Hayang highway line where the 542 Armored 542 Brigade and the 543 Brigade are stationed, to the northwest is Hayang, where the 772 Brigade is stationed and to the west, and to the west is Gyeongsan, where the 7711 Brigade and the 773 Brigade are stationed.

After leaving behind the troops guarding the defensive line, the two armies launched a rapid attack on the South Korean army.

The battle began in 130 and lasted until the evening of the 6th.

The main offensive force is the 54th Army, not the 77th Army, because

It is a rugged hilly area, and it is difficult for the 77th Army, which is dominated by wheeled vehicles, to be able to quickly assault the 54th Army, which is mainly tracked combat vehicles.

Ling Yunxiao had no choice, so he could only willingly defend the defense line for the 54th Army.

During the battle, the South Korean army erected pontoon bridges over the Miryang River several times, hoping to cross the Miryang River and escape from the encirclement. Relying on the battlefield information provided by unmanned reconnaissance aircraft and KZ-199, two air assault brigades of the 17th Army were dispatched in turn, using helicopter gunships to suppress the ROK troops gathered on the river beach, and using low-altitude assault troops to establish a defensive base on the south bank of the Miryang River.

About 1 South Korean infantry held out for less than 9 hours.

It's not that the South Korean army doesn't want to resist, it's that there are no means of resistance. In the face of the DZ-211 all-electric main battle tank, which could not even deal with tank guns, the South Korean infantry with only rifles either surrendered, were killed by the machine guns on the tank, or were crushed into meat sauce by the tank's tracks.

This round of battles showed the diversity of tactics of the Army of the Republic.

Let the 77th Army, which is better at attacking, take up the imperial mission, and let the 54th Army, which is better at defense, take up the offensive mission, and the two switch roles, which are related to both the actual situation and the quality of the front-line commanders. If you let the 77th Army attack and the 54th Army defend, the result will definitely be very different.

As soon as the battle on the north bank of the Miryang River ended, the battle for Daegu began.

With the 3811th Panzer Brigade attacking from the north (the 383rd Brigade had previously launched an attack from the west), artillery brigades were put into battle one after another, and the 77th Army, which captured Gyeongsan (less than 30 kilometers from Daegu), put on a posture of attacking Daegu, and the South Korean troops defending Daegu soon lost the will to resist.

The main forces have already been wiped out, what is the point of continuing to resist?

The battle lasted until the early morning of the 7th, and the task of cleaning up the Andong War was handed over to the 42nd Panzer 382 of the Army and rushed to the battlefield. After about 8 hours of rest, the 2 rapid counter-brigades of the 77th Army launched an attack on Daegu.

At this point, 5 were concentrated in the Daegu direction: the surface combat brigade and the 3 air assault brigade.

At 7 o'clock in the morning of the 7th, Qiu Shoujun announced his surrender after holding out for 36~hours.

From Andong to Daegu, large-scale battles proved the importance of mobility capabilities.

With its strong mobility and attacking 3 corps and 5 air assault brigades, it is possible to put in a sufficient number of offensive troops in each battle, without putting in too many combat troops. The most outstanding performance was the 77th Army and the Air Assault Brigade, especially the 77th Army. During the eight-hour battle, the 7th Army not only completed the in-depth assault mission, but also participated in three large-scale battles, all of which were the main force on the battlefield. The 38th Army and the 54th Army also participated in 2 battles respectively, and the 5 air assault brigades participated in more than 2 battles. Without the ability to maneuver on the battlefield, no single unit would have been able to participate in several large-scale battles in such a short period of time.

A rapid offensive has further demonstrated the importance of logistical support.

In addition to mobilizing the newly formed Army Aviation Brigade, Cheng Yi also asked five air assault brigades to organize "redundant" transport helicopters to carry war materials for the front-line troops. In particular, in the battle for Daegu, almost all of the combat supplies needed by the front-line attacking units and artillery brigades were airlifted by helicopters. In 5 hours, from the afternoon of the 6th to the early morning of the 7th, 250 helicopters airlifted 750 tons of shells to the artillery brigade. Without such a strong airlift capability, no matter how much artillery is invested, it will become an ornament because there are no shells.

The role played by transport planes should not be underestimated, and throughout the campaign, the ammunition and materials required by the 77th Army were provided by transport planes, and most of the combat materials needed by the 54th Army were also transported by transport planes. After the occupation of Gyeongju, the tactical transport planes of the Air Force and the Navy made 840 sorties in 30 hours (equivalent to 5 sorties per transport aircraft), and transported 31,000~ combat materials to the front-line troops!

Efficient air support has once again become the main force for defeating the enemy.

Within 80 ~ hours, the fighters of the Air Force and the Navy made 7,842 sorties, carried out sub-battlefield interdiction missions, 2,763 battlefield support missions, threw more than 36,700 ~ tons of ammunition, destroyed 850 fixed targets, and more than 24C0C~ mobile targets, and air strikes became the most powerful fire support for the offensive forces.

Of course, no one can ignore the role of artillery.

Without artillery, the 38th Army would not have been able to capture Daegu on the morning of the 7th, and it would have been impossible to exceed the campaign mission. The 6 artillery brigades involved in the battle were the most rapid fire support forces. According to the statistics of the front-line combat units, from the time they were blocked by the enemy to the arrival of artillery support, there were only 2 minutes on average! That is, if the range of the artillery is 30 meters, the artillery can fire within 30 seconds after the attacking force issues a request for fire. Such a swift strike capability, not to mention tactical aviation, even the armed helicopters circling on the battlefield cannot do it.

In the final analysis, the fourth campaign got off to a good start, and in the final analysis, it was still a powerful joint combat capability.

Within 80 hours, Pei Chengyi issued a total of 117 operational orders to the front line, adjusted combat operations three times, and all combat units quickly and promptly adjusted their deployment to participate in new battles. If there is no strong enough joint command ability, I am afraid that Pei Chengyi can only stare dryly in the rear.

A good start is half the battle.
