Volume 7 The Smoke of the Peninsula Chapter 118 The backbone

The advent of the aircraft made the aircraft carrier, which is the take-off and landing platform for aircraft, replace the battleship and become the hegemon". [No pop-up novel network]

The advent of missiles has enriched the navy's combat means and tactics.

Compared with the Second World War, although the modern naval fleet still uses carrier-based aircraft as the main striking force, the means of striking have increased considerably. Actual combat has proven that aviation is only one of the long-range strike forces of the fleet, and at some point or in some case, the strike effectiveness of missiles is no worse than that of aviation.

As an active platform for aviation, aviation generally does not carry long-range missiles used to attack ground and sea targets.

The missile strike mission is undertaken by the escort warships of the fleet, especially the "combat platforms" such as cruisers and destroyers with relatively large displacement and capable of carrying a large amount of weapons and ammunition.

After the 1st team completed the round strike mission, the escort warships in the battle group went into battle.

The protagonist is not the 2 air defense cruisers, which are second only to the aircraft carriers in tonnage, but 6 multipurpose destroyers with a slightly smaller displacement.

In just 15 minutes, six destroyers fired a total of 100 cruise missiles.

As a "rising star," when building an aircraft carrier battle group, the Republic can only absorb as much as possible the ways and means of other countries to use the aircraft carrier battle group while fully summing up its combat experience. Of course, the main object of reference is the US Navy. To be honest, the Navy of the Republic does not know much about the tactics of aircraft carrier battle groups.

Before the Peninsula War, the air combat group of the Republic Navy had only participated in the South China Sea War, and its role was not obvious.

In the end, how to build a "both offensive and defensive" aircraft carrier battle group? Including Lin Xiaolei. No one in the Navy of the Republic was able to give an exact answer.

In addition to borrowing. You can only grope for it.

The strongest place to sail is not a defensive capability. Rather, it is an unparalleled striking ability.

"The best defense is offense." This phrase could not be more appropriate for aircraft carriers.

Arguably. All design features of the aircraft carrier are designed for offense. And not defense. For this. Aircraft carriers can be equipped without large-caliber naval guns, carry long-range missiles, lay thick armor, and even have very limited weapons for self-defense. In terms of air defense capabilities, aircraft carriers are not comparable to cruisers and destroyers. In terms of anti-submarine capabilities, aircraft carriers are not comparable to frigates. In terms of attack capability, it is not even comparable to a missile speedboat.

In addition to the aircraft carriers of the former Soviet Navy. All national ground aircraft carriers prioritize aircraft carrying capacity.

In order to carry more carrier-based aircraft and provide more powerful carrier-based aircraft, aircraft carriers can abandon other more necessary performance and adopt a strange shape design.

In order to increase the survivability of aircraft carriers, escort warships must be provided.

The escort warships in the air battle group are not only the personal bodyguards of the aircraft carrier, but also the main strike platform of the battle group.

A truly formidable aircraft carrier battle group must have powerful escort warships.

It was also on the issue of escorting warships that the Navy of the Republic encountered many problems.

To protect aircraft carriers, two main problems are solved: air defense and anti-submarine.

In the face of the aircraft carrier battle group, in addition to the aircraft carrier battle group, the other surface fleets are vulnerable. The only things that can really threaten aircraft carriers are fighters and missiles in the air, as well as submarines and torpedoes under the surface.

In the face of a less formidable adversary, such as a second-rate country like South Korea, a multipurpose destroyer can take on most of the escort missions. But in the face of a strong adversary, it is difficult for multipurpose warships to ensure the safety of aircraft carriers.

While arguing on the need to display air defense cruisers, the Navy of the Republic conducted a confrontation exercise.

Simulating a "surprise attack" by a certain country's carrier-based air force on the "Republic" aircraft carrier battle group, the escort warship consisting of three destroyers and three frigates could intercept less than 60 anti-ship missiles when the carrier-based fighters did not have time to strengthen the perimeter air defense network. According to the calculation that one fighter carrying anti-ship missiles, 24 fighters in one wave and 80 percent penetration rate, one round of attacks can severely damage the "Republic" aircraft carrier. In the face of an opponent with heavy bombers, the result will be even more disastrous.

After confrontational exercises, the Navy decided to design and build "specialized" air defense cruisers.

This is the origin of the cruisers of the "Qinling" class. The name of the cruiser after the mountain range probably means that the cruiser will be able to block all air threats like a mountain.

As a "professional" air defense warship, the most outstanding thing about the "Qinling" class is its air defense capability.

It has an octagonal planar antenna, a radiation unit on each plane antenna, an air detection range of 640 kilometers, a detection distance of only 120 kilometers for low-altitude targets, a vertical fire launch system for air defense missiles with 2 sets of 128 units in the front and rear, and a total of 128 units of anti-aircraft missile vertical firing system. The long-range air-to-ground air-to-ship anti-aircraft missile with a maximum range of 1,000 kilometers is 160 kilometers against ballistic missiles, and the range is 120 kilometers against low-altitude cruise missiles and the maximum altitude is 35 kilometers.

According to the place of publication of the Navy of the Republic

The "Qinling" class is capable of intercepting the total target in three times in one air defense operation. When attacking 1 target with 2 missiles, the hit rate is more than 96%. Based on this calculation, the "Qinling" class is capable of shooting down an air target in a single battle when using long-range anti-aircraft missiles.

Of course, the actual combat efficiency is certainly lower than the theoretical calculations.

Even so, the anti-aircraft combat capabilities of the cruisers of the "Qinling" class are still second to none in the Navy of the Republic, and even among the navies of the world.

Compared to air defense destroyers, the combat efficiency of air defense of the "Qinling" class, with an increase in displacement of about 2000, increased by at least 30%!

In addition to the combat capabilities of air defense, the other combat capabilities of the "Qinling" class are comparable to those of destroyers and are not outstanding.

With the "anti-aircraft pillar", there must also be an "anti-submarine barrier".

Although there are certainly attack nuclear submarines within the aircraft carrier battle group, or electric submarines that can keep up with the speed of the aircraft carrier battle group, the importance of anti-submarine warfare ships as the last anti-submarine barrier of the aircraft carrier cannot be underestimated.

Since the Fourth Indo-Pakistani War, many naval battles have proven that the effectiveness of anti-submarine warfare of multi-purpose warships is not high.

Anti-submarine warfare is not the same as air defense operations, whether it is an anti-submarine missile or an anti-submarine torpedo, the range is not too far, rarely more than 00 km, and generally within 20 km. In addition, the current distance to the submarine is not too far, so the anti-submarine operation has a strong "suddenness". As a result, the anti-submarine warfare ships in the fleet need to be "comprehensive" and monitor the underwater situation in all directions.

Large warships are expensive, and combat efficiency does not increase proportionally to displacement.

The most effective anti-submarine warfare ships should be frigates with appropriate displacement, high sailing speed, and weak noise.

To this end, the "all-electric surface warships" built by the Navy of the Republic are specialized in the implementation of "professional" anti-submarine frigates.

The "Huaihe" class frigate was born.

As a "small warship" with a displacement of only 2500: ground, the "Huaihe" class has only point air defense systems, carries only anti-ship missiles, and is equipped with naval guns with a caliber of only 76 mm. Among the 2500:class warships, the "Huaihe" not only adopts the "trimaran type", but is also the only ship that can carry three 1C-class anti-submarine helicopters. Even better, the noise of the "Huaihe" at the speed most commonly used in submarine search at 16 knots is only 1C4 Bass, and if a towed sonar is used, it can represent a submarine with a noise of more than 95 Bass within a kilometer. Unlike submarines, the main submarine search tool for anti-submarine warfare ships is active sonar, not passive sonar. Using the "integrated power supply system", the Huaihe is equipped with a peak power of 75KWW and can search and track submarines in three different modes. Using anti-submarine helicopters, anti-submarine missiles with a range of 1,000 meters, and light anti-submarine torpedoes with a range of 20 kilometers, the "Huaihe" class has three anti-submarine nets.

How well the "Huaihe" class performs has not been confirmed so far.

One point can be illustrated, the P33 multipurpose frigate, which is based on the hull of the "Huaihe" class and specially sold to the outside world, has received a total of 72 orders and intends to settle down in one country's local navy. In order to ensure timely delivery to users, Jiangnan Shipyard and Dalian Shipyard have also built two new slipways.

Although cruisers and frigates are the main escort warships to ensure the safety of aircraft carriers, no one can deny the important value of multipurpose destroyers in aircraft carrier battle groups. In the event of an engagement with a relatively weak enemy, if the enemy is unable to pose a threat to the aircraft carrier, a multi-purpose destroyer will become the most "busy" warship in the fleet.

Like the US Navy, the Republic positions the destroyer as a "multifunctional ground strike platform."

The so-called "multi-functional" means that destroyers must possess powerful air defense, sea, and antisubmarine warfare capabilities, and be able to play a role in fleet defense operations. The "ground strike platform" requires the destroyer to have the ability to strike ground targets, and can replace carrier-based aircraft to strike ground targets in some cases.

It can be said that the excellent surface of the "Zumwalt" class in the Iranian war is the best proof of the effectiveness of destroyer ground strikes.

With this as a criterion, the "Taihu" class multipurpose destroyer came into being.

Compared with the "Zumwalt" class, the "Taihu" class also has powerful air defense and antisubmarine combat capabilities, with a total capacity of 96 ground-based "general-purpose missile vertical launch systems," which can carry anti-aircraft missiles, anti-ship missiles, anti-submarine missiles, and land-attack cruise missiles in accordance with operational requirements. In the face of an adversary such as South Korea, it generally carries cruise missiles, anti-submarine missiles, anti-ship missiles, and anti-aircraft missiles.

It can be said that in the entire battle group, the destroyer is the only warship that takes on strike missions, except for aircraft carriers.

It was precisely in this way that when the aircraft carrier dispatched carrier-based aircraft to bomb military facilities on Jeju Island, the 6 "Taihu" class destroyers in the formation fired all the cruise missiles in a dense salvo.

120 missiles, enough to destroy dozens of important targets!

In terms of strike capability, 6 destroyers are enough to withstand 1 carrier-based fighter wing! (To be continued, if you want to know how to know the future chapters, more,!) )
