1012: One Year Later (Fourth Shift)
The morning sun poured through the cracks in the curtains into the bedroom, and Link was awakened by the harsh sunlight and opened his eyes dimly.
He sighed and turned his head to look around him, realizing that his fiancée was asleep.
So, Link tiptoed out of bed, went to the toilet to wash up, and planned to go and get Rachel ready for the morning.
Outside the kitchen window, the sun was shining and the wind was beautiful. The lake in the backyard was blown by the breeze.
Seeing this scene, Link was stunned.
It all seems to be so similar, even identical, to last summer!
He hurriedly took out his phone and looked at it, then shook his head slightly.
He didn't dream, he didn't wake up and go back to the summer last year when the dynasty was established.
The year on the phone is 2016.
All that happened this year is real......
That's right, it's been a year. It's been a year since the Grizzlies established their dynasty in 2015.
In less than a month, Link will be celebrating his 28th birthday.
From the age of 22 to now 28 years old, before you know it, Link has been a professional player for 6 years.
He couldn't help but look at himself in the mirror, although 28 years old is not old, he does look a little older than he did look young.
And, now he's not a young player in the league anymore.
Link shook his head, time passed faster than expected.
The last time I experienced such a morning was yesterday. I used to think that I was going to run for three, and it seemed like a very distant thing.
But now, it's all close at hand.
Link took two eggs out of the fridge, heated them up, and started making breakfast.
While frying eggs, Link recalled the scenes of the past year.
Time flies so fast that he doesn't have the time to savor it slowly like he did today.
It's not been a smooth year for both the Grizzlies and Link.
Last summer, the Grizzlies lost ground on the free agent market. On the other hand, several of the Grizzlies' biggest opponents have been strengthened to varying degrees.
So, the Grizzlies started their new season without being favored.
This year, Mark. Gasol is 31 years old, and he has finally passed the age of what he is called "young".
"Big Black Bear" Randolph is 35 years old, and the naïve guy who stuffed popcorn into Link's car six years ago is coming to the end of his career.
Vince. Carter is 39 years old, and everyone is talking about whether this will be his last season.
Tony. Allen is 34 years old, and you can clearly see that he is a little weak on the basketball court defending the lads who are more than ten years younger than him.
The former "little AI" has also come to the age of 32. He dunked less and less. The average points per game in the playoffs and the regular season have also dropped to single digits.
The opposite of the aging of the roster is the youthfulness of the Grizzlies' fresh blood.
In the main rotation, Harrell, Jokic, Richardson and Dinwiddie are all first-year rookies. While Jokic and Dinwiddie are technically sophomores, they are in their first year of official NBA play.
When a team has so many rookie players in the main rotation, it's usually something that rebuilding the team does.
As a result, no one is optimistic about the Grizzlies' season. After three consecutive championships, everyone took it for granted that it was time for the Grizzlies to fall.
After the start of the regular season, the Golden State Warriors, who joined Durant, became the former Grizzlies.
They slaughtered all sides in the alliance and were invincible.
The opening 24-game winning streak broke the record set by the Grizzlies for the longest opening streak in the league in the 13-14 season.
With no consecutive losses in a single season, it became the second team after the Grizzlies to achieve this feat.
He has not lost to the same team more than once in a single season, also the first since the Grizzlies.
The first all-time team in a single-season with away wins, the second-fastest team in history to lock up the playoffs, and the number of three-pointers hit in a single season is 1077...... And, the Warriors tied the Grizzlies' previous record of 74 wins in a single season, tied with the Grizzlies for the most in history.
No matter how you look at it, the Warriors have the shadow of the Grizzlies back then. With Bill. Simmons' words were, "They're an overly strong team!" ”
And what about grizzly bears? The Grizzlies won't even be able to make the playoffs this year. But their record of 58 wins in a single season is naturally far from the Warriors' 74 wins.
It's also the first time in four years that the Grizzlies haven't won more than 60 games in a single season!
In this year's regular season, the Grizzlies did expose some problems with the decline in strength. But what really broke them was not the strength of the squad, but the injuries!
If we talk about last season, the Grizzlies have fallen into the injury curse. Then this season, they have fallen directly into purgatory caused by injuries.
Gasol has only played 52 games this season, and on 2/10/16 he announced an indefinite break due to a fracture in his right foot. On Feb. 24, the Grizzlies reluctantly announced that Gasol Jr. had undergone foot surgery and would miss the rest of the season.
Conley wasn't much better, playing just 56 games and playing the second-lowest appearance of his career. Also in February '16, Conley underwent surgery on his left heel to remove a protruding small bone, which was reimbursed for the season.
The remaining veterans, Randolph played 68 games, Iguodala played 65 games, and Tony Murphy played 65 games. Allen 64 games, Carter 60 games, all three of them are stop-and-go, small injuries constantly.
This season, the Grizzlies have a total of 28 players who have played for the team! Most of them are firefighters who have made less than 15 appearances.
You can see how serious the Grizzlies' injury problems are.
However, not every time the Grizzlies sign a firefighter, they can sign a guy like Whiteside.
In the end, Link could only take a bunch of milky young people, a bunch of old bones and a bunch of mercenaries to make the playoffs as third in the West.
In the first two rounds, the Grizzlies played very hard. They first eliminated the Trail Blazers 4-2, and then in the Western Conference semifinals, they defeated this year's second-place Spurs in the West through a tiebreaker, the championship favorite with the "Double German Combination".
After a two-round series, Link averaged 35.4 points per game! It can be said that he single-handedly pushed the Grizzlies to the Western Conference Finals.
In the Western Conference Finals, the Grizzlies met the Warriors, who were nearly invincible this season.
Eventually, Kevin. Durant finally got his revenge. He finally defeated Link and experienced victory.
4-2, clean, the Warriors eliminated the Grizzlies. For the first time in four years, a Western team has passed the Grizzlies!
For most people, it's already a miracle that Link can hit this point, and he's proven himself.
No one else is leading this year's Grizzlies to do better than him. Last year, Westbrook led the better-formed Thunder on his own, but he didn't even make the playoffs.
But Link doesn't think there's anything to be happy about, losing to the Warriors and losing to Durant is the last thing Link wants to face.
This year, the regular season MVP was taken by Durant, who won 74 wins, and the best defensive player went to Draymond. Green. Link was empty-handed except for a double formation.
Although Link had long thought that the Grizzlies would most likely fail, when defeat did come, this extremely competitive guy, the guy with three championship rings in his hand, the guy who was used to dominating others, was extremely angry.
Link closed his eyes, and his mind was full of three championship rings. And the voices behind them.
"It's over! The Memphis Grizzlies, who are participating in the Finals for the first time in team history, won the NBA championship, and they are the champions! They are the biggest dark horses! Ladies and gentlemen, a new era begins! ”
"LeBron gets down on one knee and the game is over! Link led his team to successfully defend the crowning honor in Miami! 4 to 0, they swept and won, they are the kings of the world! ”
Link sat down on the ground, and Mike. Conley tosses the basketball into the air, the electronic beep sounds, it's over, it's over! The Grizzlies won, not once, not twice, but three, three times! They are the champions, they have built their own dynasty, their golden age! Long live the Memphis Grizzlies, long live Link! ”
The sounds grew quieter and fader away until they disappeared from Link's head.
At this moment, Link suddenly smelled a burning smell.
He hurriedly opened his eyes and looked, and sure enough, the eggs were paste......
Link shook his head and dumped the completely blackened egg into the trash.
He knew that those three championships had become a thing of the past forever.
Next, it's the Warriors and Cavaliers who battle it out in the Finals. He, on the other hand, fried eggs in his kitchen......
The golden age that belonged to the Grizzlies is over. Two days ago, it was terminated at Oracle Arena.
Right now, Link has only two paths to choose from.
Or, completely sink and become a hero in people's memories, embracing the honor you already have with peace of mind, and living forever in the past.
Or, as he told Pera last year, find a way to build a new golden age and reclaim everything that belongs to the Grizzlies.
Even though, it's almost impossible to complete. Even though, there is a high chance that all efforts will fall short.
Link shook his head, whichever path he chose. This summer is sure to be extremely busy.
