Chapter 168: Target North
PS: Bow and thank robindragen book friends for their monthly passes.
It took a long time for these people to decide on the value of a piece of parchment, and it took them two hours to complete all the estimates. Henry had already eaten a large piece of roast beef during this time. I have to say that the chef here is really good, the whole beef is very delicious, and the heat is just right.
"That's the value we estimated, and if you don't think it's a problem, you can go to the library and pick up the materials you want right now." As he spoke, an old man handed over a piece of paper.
Henry took the list and looked at it, and found that the price was more than double what he had expected. "Thank you very much, take me to the library now, and give you these parchments in advance, because the reputation of the Hubbell family can be trusted."
"Damn it! Hako! Take this distinguished guest to the library, I can't wait to see what is left of the parchment. A half-bald old man roared loudly.
Harco sighed and walked over to Henry and sat down with a gesture of please. "Please come with me, it seems that the knowledge will not be my turn in a week." With that, he took the lead and walked inside.
As soon as the two of them walked out of the room, the oldest ones jumped up from their chairs. They went to the parchment table and looked through it quickly, discussing it as they went. It didn't take long for me to go through the rough runs.
The balding old man laughed and waved a description of the hybridization technique of plants. "Hahahaha! I finally found the right theory! It seems that the real yĆ n who failed in the past were all because of a bit of a problem with the method! The line of thought is absolutely correct! With that, he ran straight to his room.
Another old mage said to the others with some concern, "We don't have a backup yet, is it okay to let Halber take it like this?" You know, he's had three accidents in a row in a week. Almost everything in the room was spared. Remember the time four days ago, when a tree grew straight out of the house and almost pierced the ceiling? ā
"Don't worry too much, Halber was a very powerful mage a few years ago, but now he's just a little too focused on his own research. Leave him alone, put these things together in a book, and it seems that there will be no shortage of new inspiration in the near future. As he spoke, an old man with glasses began to sort through all the papers.
Harco led Henry through several transparent walls to a small room carved with intricate patterns. His hand quickly touched the gems on the wall, and soon several of them released a dazzling light that pierced the eyes. Wait until your vision is restored. The room was gone. All that remains are rows and rows of huge bookshelves.
Hako pointed to the huge library and said, "This is the secret library of the Hubbell family, and the first page of each book is marked with a number, which corresponds to its value. You can choose what you need according to the title and table of contents, and you can only read it after you have chosen it. ā
Henry nodded and started from the beginning. The mess here was a real eye-opener for him. There is even the issue of frog and horse hybridization. He struggled to find out what he needed from these meaningless records. The whole process lasts most of the day. Harko yawned boredly as he silently followed behind.
"Okay, that's all, you can do the math. If nothing else, I'm leaving for Icewind Dale tomorrow. As he spoke, Henry shoved the books and some papers he had picked out in front of Harco.
After a few minutes, Hako had counted all the books. He returned these things to Henry and said with a smile, "No problem, it's all worth it." If you set out tomorrow, I can give you a few horses for free, which will help you move quickly through the area controlled by the barbarian tribes. You know, those guys aren't very friendly, especially for mages like you and me. ā
"Thank you so much, I'm still having a headache for these Pegasus barbarians, you've been a great help." Henry bowed in thanks, then stuffed all the books and papers into the dimensional bag.
Returning to his temporary quarters, Henry began to read the words eagerly. The unique thinking logic of the Hubbell family opened his eyes, and there were many things that could actually be widely used, but they were buried because the details were not handled well. He carefully analyzed this knowledge in his mind and tried to strip out the useful parts.
After a night's rest, the group returned to the road, and Harko personally escorted them out of the gate and presented them with three black pack horses. These guys aren't particularly fast, but they have the stamina to last and adapt to the cold northern climate. After two days of living as a cute bear, Ares has finally regained its normal size, and it is now readjusting to its larger size.
Henry used his druid abilities to soothe the horses before they mounted, otherwise they wouldn't have been able to stay by the side of the big brown bear. Along the trade route, the three men headed north towards Mirabah. It was the last stopover of their journey, and then the Ten Towns across the roof of the world to the Ten Towns of Icewind Valley.
With the horses, the group at least doubled their speed and reached the periphery of Mirabah in just three days. Along the way, they saw an endless stream of caravans coming and going, and as the place with the most abundant ore and grain reserves in the entire north, its every move involved the nerves of the merchants and lords.
Henry and his party took a ferry to the other side of the Miral River, and it didn't take long to see the towering walls. The orc warrior rode forward as he introduced Zuvosa to the city. As an extension of the civilized world, it is the richest city in the entire North except for Waterdeep. The minerals here include almost all known metals, and the production is huge.
The entire city is made of stone, and gray and white are the main colors here. The roads, houses, walls, and most of the temples were all made of large piles of stones. There are more than 20,000 permanent residents, of which about 4,000 are dwarves. It is best known for its never-extinguishing fires and the finest gems.
Now that he is here, Henry does not intend to return empty-handed. He plans to buy some precious stones and rare metals here, after all, it is much cheaper to buy them in the place of origin. After paying the entrance tax, the group walked through the city gate and walked down the street, looking at the signs of the shops on both sides, intending to find a hotel to spend the night.
Soon Vaughn took the lead to an inn called "Golden River". "Head, we'll stay here tonight."
Henry glanced at his surroundings, and everything was pretty good except for a little shabby. "Since you're familiar with this place, let's go in, anyway, we'll only stay for one night, and we'll check out the nearby shops tomorrow morning and move on."
The orc warrior smiled and nodded, pushing open the door to the inn. Although it was already night, there were not many people in the hall. He walked straight to the bar and lined up the tables and shouted, "Bazel! Why is your dilapidated inn still so deserted, it looks like it's about to go out of business. ā
"Bastard! Whoever dares to curse this inn for going out of business, I'm going to beat you out of lunch. As he spoke, a one-armed old man emerged from behind the door of the counter.
He saw Vaughn stunned for a moment, then walked over laughing and patted him on the shoulder. "Damn, where have you been all these years. If I hadn't heard the news from Waterdeep some time ago, I would have thought you were dead. ā
The orc warrior smiled and touched his head. "A lot has really happened in the last few years, especially in recent times, and it's just as exciting as the story of the bard. Without further ado, let's get three rooms and dinner, and feed the big brown bear and three horses at the door. ā
Bazel glanced at Henry, then took a closer look at Zuvosa. Then he turned his head and asked in surprise, "Oh my God, you actually found yourself a companion!" I really don't see that someone like you can like a rude guy. ā
The old man's words suddenly made the ranger blush, and Vaughn felt embarrassed to death. "Hey! Old folk! Don't talk nonsense, we're just companions on adventures together. ā
"Alright! If you say no, it's not. As he spoke, Bazel pulled out a bunch of keys from under the counter and threw them on the table. You can choose what kind of room you want, and you don't need me to lead the way with your familiarity with this hotel. ā
"Your service attitude is so bad, no wonder there are so few people who come to stay." The orc warrior muttered as he removed the three keys from above. "Just these three, hurry up and bring dinner, I'm dying of hunger." With that, he took the lead up the stairs. With a rude gesture of one-armed, Bazel turned around and went into the kitchen to prepare dinner.
Henry looked playfully at the two embarrassed companions from the stairs until Vaughn took the lead in the door. He plucked up the courage to say to Zubosa, "Uh...... This guy Bazel is a little open-mouthed, don't take what he said just now to heart, he has no malicious intentions. The Ranger glanced at him and went into his room, without saying a word.
The orc warrior touched his nose and turned his head and asked, "Head, did I mess up just now?" ā
"No, I think you have a good chance. The exact outcome is unknown, but it is still very optimistic based on the current situation. With that, Henry pushed the door open with a smile on his face and walked into his room, leaving him alone in the hallway.
Vaughn stood there for a long time with blank eyes, and then patted his head in fear. Clearly, he didn't understand what Henry meant. (To be continued......)
