Chapter 37: The Return of Darkness (VI)
Leo. Ban Rui opened his eyes and stared at the darkness in front of him. The dark darkness was so black that it was impossible to see that it looked like day to the dark elf, and she lowered her eyes, feeling only hunger and cold, because she hadn't eaten in days. However, this feeling is not new to Leo, as the second daughter of the third family of the city of Calles Sodal, Leo is no stranger to this feeling. The Dark Elves are a race of treachery and intrigue, and each person, every family, longs to be able to step on the shoulders and corpses of others to ascend to the throne of supremacy. The title of the first family, the position of the master mother, these are the goals that the dark elves have fought for all their lives.
But Leo is not among them, she is a "Brighton", which is the Dark Elf word, which translates to "defective".
Historically, the Dark Elves have fled the brutal Creation War to the dark Underworld, where they have severed their ties with nature, but their arrogant self-esteem as elves does not allow them to play with soil and rocks like dwarves. They still inherited the keen magical sensibilities of their surface relatives, and they are still harnessing this power. However, this should also bring an unimaginable opposite.
The magic of darkness surged deep underground, and the prolonged use of this magic power caused the dark elves themselves to merge with the dark magic, and their skin lost the whiteness of the elves, dyed with a dark color. But for them, it doesn't matter anymore, because it's not just their skin, it's their hearts and souls that are blackened.
With the help of the magic of darkness, the dark elves have developed their own unique magical civilization beneath the surface, evil, cruel, and dark. But powerful and terrifying. They are the closest users of dark magic, and the humblest of slaves. Almost every family will have a powerful mage as their backing, and only those women with the most powerful mana and keen dark power will have a chance to become the head mother of the family and lead the entire dark elf family to the pinnacle of glory. Because of this, almost every female of the Dark Elves is a natural spellcaster, and they are masters of spells. They wield the magic of darkness and death, and they possess immense power.
Almost.
Because not every Dark Elf female possesses such a gift.
Leo is an exception, a cruel exception. Because she had been diagnosed with no magical talent since birth, she could not even sense the ubiquitous stream of darkness, and even her skin was not as dark as the other dark elves, but took on a pure white color. This color has caused Leo untold pain since she was a child, and almost all of the dark elves will look at her with a mocking smile. If it weren't for her mother, the housemother would have been curious to keep her in captivity as a plaything. Leo even suspected that she would die in sacrifice on the day she was born.
But since she is alive, she must continue to live.
Leo practiced like crazy, she had no magic, but she still had her own body, her own hands. Soon, she stood out as the most prominent warrior in her family, if not for the fact that there was no precedent in the history of the Dark Elves. Leo had no doubt that she would replace that stupid male as the first female master of the Dark Elf family.
But Leo is also well aware. That's completely impossible.
In the society of the Dark Elves, only magic is everything, and the warrior who wields the sword and the sword will never gain respect, and only the low-ranking male Dark Elves will hold this position, they are nothing more than the shield and sword of their sisters, their mothers. It's just a matter of helping them eliminate threats and fend off them. In the eyes of the dark elves, this is something that only low-class slaves do, and Leo, as a female dark elf with aristocratic blood, whether she is abandoned by the darkness or not, she cannot be so willing to be in the company of those low-class slaves.
She grew stronger. However, Leo found that the society of the dark elves was out of step with her, she was not respected for her strength, and she was still ridiculed, insulted, and despised by the other dark elves as she was when she was a child. Leo was furious at this, and she had fantasized countless times in sleepless nights of easily tearing the throats of those who laughed at her with the dagger in her hand, listening to their dying wails, death of hatred and anger.
In the end, however, she was unable to make her revenge happen, perhaps because she sensed the discordant flames burning deep within her daughter, or because of other considerations, Leo was taken by her mother as part of a deal with the undead, and she led several elite male dark elves to the surface on behalf of her family, and became a humble subordinate of Barend, the "Soul Chaser". This is pretty much the first chance for many Dark Elves to go to the surface, and the nobles of the Night Nation don't think much of the losers who hide deep underground, and they just treat the Dark Elves as allies to exploit. And the Dark Elves know that if they disappoint the undead, everything they have worked so hard to build underground will be wiped out. Therefore, in the dark underground realm, almost every family of dark elves will seek the support and assistance of the undead forces on the surface to strengthen their position. His own family was also able to gain the right to rule the city of Calessodar because of his humble allegiance to one of the four demon generals. However, the experience of living in the Night Nation made Leo know that it didn't really matter, and if someone could bring greater benefit and help to the Four Demons, they would definitely not mind letting their supporters change seats.
For Leo, life in the Land of Night is no better than being in the dark underground. If underground, the Dark Elves would only talk about mockery and threats because of her status as the second daughter of the First Family and as a woman, then in the realm of eternal night, Leo has learned to understand that actions speak louder than words. The undead don't waste time pestering you, and the rhetoric between the dark elves is a waste for them, they don't have all the desires that a living creature should have. All the ideas were incomprehensible even to Leo. She had seen several of the most favored women of the Underworld family easily killed by lichs, vampires, or even death knights, and then turned into corpse slaves. It was only because of the arrogance they had cultivated in their family that they did not do what the undead had ordered them to do in the first place, and by the time they realized that the great mistake had been made, it was too late. For the undead, any rhetoric is meaningless. So while they try to use their words to redeem their failures, all that awaits them is cold death and punishment.
Whenever this happens, Leo chooses to sit on the sidelines. Because every year, so many "little princesses" who are spoiled underground are punished for this, and they consider themselves important allies and ambassadors of peace. But in reality they are nothing more than slaves to the undead and lowly servants. They died because they didn't know this, but Leo would never be in the middle of it, starting underground. She learned how to live and act humbly under the gaze of others. As a result, she quickly adapts to life in the Land of Night, and gradually gains Barende's trust——— albeit as much as the hounds she loves when hunting.
That's why Leo came here only to carry out a mission——— the lord of the realm angered Barende and killed his men. This is not a big deal, but the spread of such news in the Dark Realm will always make the faces of the undead look less beautiful. So, in order to save face, or just to make a gesture, Leo was sent here to kill the young lord, and once again swear the unquestionable oath of authority of the Four Demon Generals with blood and death.
But she failed.
The other party was obviously prepared. When Leo sneaks under the fortress with her men, she is dumbfounded by the overwhelming bombardment of magic before she even has time to think about how to infiltrate. The four elite warriors under her command didn't even have time to resist at all, and they returned to the Western Heavens. Those two mages were so powerful, even though they looked like ordinary, fragile and lowly human women, Leo was sure that even the first matron in her own family would never have such a powerful spell-casting ability.
Even Leo herself almost died under the spell of the other party. But the color of her skin saved her life. After seeing Leo's skin hidden deep under the cloak, the two girls clearly showed irrepressible surprise. Then they arrested themselves and imprisoned them in the dungeon. Leo didn't know how she would be treated, she had heard a lot about the people of the Continent of Light in the Land of Night, they were kind (this word has absolutely no meaning in the Land of Night), stupid, cowardly. The life is short, but at the same time insidious, cunning and vile. Leo remembered her lessons in history at the Dark Elf Academy, where the vile elves forced them into battle when they tried to save the last trace of fire for the elves, stripping them of their lives for the survival of the purebreds. Forcing them to face the enemy's armies like slaves. Eventually, they broke free from their kind of slavery and went underground, where they lived the free life they had always dreamed of. But Leo never forgot that it was the cruel, bloody, and evil deeds of the surface elves that forced her race to leave the ugly, flaming fireballs of its cage.
They have to pay for it.
And what about these humans?
Leo had heard rumors of humans, and she had seen many human slaves in the Night Realm, who were fragile, ignorant, lustful, and stupid. And now, she is in the hands of these lowly slave races, which makes Leo a little anxious, and she frowns, waiting for the judgment about herself. Although Leo was completely ignorant of the customs and practices of the Realm of Light, the meaning of prisons, cages, and shackles must be the same everywhere.
And at this moment, the young dark elf keenly heard the footsteps coming from outside the door, and it seemed that several people were walking in his direction. The footsteps grew louder and louder, and then stopped in front of her door. Then, the door of the cage opened, and a dazzling fire shone in from the outside.
The light made her involuntarily close her eyes and turn her head............
