Provincial and municipal governments have acknowledged the discovery of patients with atypical pneumonia in Guangdong Province and Guangzhou City. The next day, except for a few grocery stores, large supermarkets were basically in sufficient supply of salt and rice, and prices fell rapidly.

On February 19, Huang Jionglie, director of the Guangzhou Municipal Health Bureau, announced that the atypical pneumonia disease had been effectively contained, and the major media in Guangzhou seemed to have gradually lost interest in "SARS" since February 20.

The so-called "great social impact" refers to the rumors that various "unknown viruses have hit Guangzhou" in Guangzhou after the Spring Festival holiday, and citizens have rushed to buy medicines, banlan root and vinegar on a large scale.

This is not the first time this phenomenon has occurred. As early as Heyuan in early January and Zhongshan in mid-January, similar rumors and panic buying frenzy have appeared in both cities. The local government quickly came forward to refute the rumors, saying that "there was no epidemic virus" or "there was no epidemic of pneumonia at all, these are all rumors". The debunking of rumors has successfully suppressed panic buying. However, it is clear that rumors cannot be collectively called rumors, because they are well-founded. By early February, many SARS patients had been admitted to many major hospitals in Guangzhou, and hundreds of medical staff in the province had been infected.

However, the theme of the press conference was that the epidemic in Guangdong has been brought under control.
