Chapter 4: Airborne Jungle
The quality of this night's sleep was not very good, and I fell asleep in a daze until dawn. On this day, everyone was much more silent than before. After we had a quick bite to eat at noon, John asked us to get dressed and pack all our gear.
At two o'clock in the afternoon, John took us to a minibus and dropped us off at the airport at the base. We packed our gear and got on a C130. When we arrived, the plane was already waiting for us. We went up and the plane took off.
The range is quite solid. On the way, I asked John how such a military plane could pass through the airspace of those countries. John's answer was simple and straightforward: "Deception." "But they didn't tell me how to deceive them.
Four hours later, our pilot informed us that we were ready to be airborne. The five of us stood up and checked each other's bags and gear. Five minutes later, the hatch behind the plane's butt opened, and the skydive signal sounded.
John stood up and came to the door of the warehouse, looked outside, and said, "Come on! It's time for the revelry. With that, he put on his windproof goggles and jumped out.
When I jumped out of the plane, I saw a patch of turquoise below. The dense canopy of trees is next to each other, making it impossible to see what is happening on the ground. We descended rapidly, and when we saw John open the parachute, we all followed and opened the parachute.
This way of opening the parachute as soon as the plane does not have an important advantage, that is, the personnel can open the parachute at a relatively low altitude at the same time, so that the personnel can be very close after landing, so that they will not be able to meet in time because they have been floating in the air for too long. This is especially necessary for abrupt tasks such as ours, where there are very few personnel.
The landing did not go well because the woods were too dense. I hung directly on the branch. But fortunately, it is not high above the ground. I pulled out my dagger, cut off the strap, and fell to the ground.
I packed my parachute and looked around. Except for John, who had already packed up and was using the beggar's satellite phone to confirm that we had landed, everyone else was busy digging a pit just like me.
After a while, we hid our parachutes in a shallow pit and buried them simply, throwing some grass on it.
John took out his pointer and looked at the map, confirmed the general direction, and said, "Test the communicator." ”
We tried to communicate one after the other, and there were no problems. John stood up and said, "Welcome to Columbia." ”
Seeing that he was still happy, I shook my head. It's obviously not a good place, at least for me that I don't like the climate. I had only been down for a moment, and I was already feeling sweating. This feeling of sweating is not because you are tired, or simply hot. It's steamed, or rather, stuffy. The air here is full of moisture, and the tall and dense canopy of trees is like a greenhouse, so that the moisture and temperature here cannot be fully volatilized. What's worse is that it also has the fishy smell of plants and earth, and even the smell of corruption. Some people will say that it is the aroma of grass and earth, and the aroma may be there, but it will definitely not be felt that way after any smell is heavy.
After a brief exchange and checking our weaponry, John led us north. I've heard people say that there are many wild animals in the jungle. And my current feeling is that there must be a lot of wildlife, because you can hear all kinds of things, especially birds and bugs. But it is not easy to see, which may be the reason why the vegetation is too dense, and you can only hear its sound but not see it.
John, who was suddenly walking in front, suddenly raised his hand, and we all immediately stopped, and looked around with our guns in hand. Soon I could faintly hear the sound of people talking among the various birds and insects.
John's hand pressed down and motioned for us to crouch. As we slowly crouched down and waited for a moment, the voice slowly became clear, and seemed to be coming from us. John looked to our left and suddenly pointed to the thick grass and bushes on the side, and we all got up and quickly ducked in.
About five minutes later, three men in civilian clothes and carrying M16 rifles approached. They talked as they walked, looking like they were complaining about something, and they glanced around as they walked.
At this time, John's voice came from the headphones: "Don't move. Let them go. ”
We hid in the grass and did not move, and watched as the three men walked in front of us, and the closest was only about a dozen meters away. I could see the appearance of the three men clearly, they were not very old, thin and thin, although they were wearing civilian clothes, but they were wearing military boots, and they looked very incongruous.
The three of them casually carried their guns and walked away. After waiting until they couldn't see them, John's voice came from the headphones: "Hurry up and move on!" This time, though, his voice sounded a little agitated.
We quickly climbed up from the grass and continued towards the north. This time we moved significantly faster. Half an hour after running, we came to a river. John pulled out his map and compass, looked at it, and said, "We'll be almost there in a little while." ”
"Why is it running so fast. Didn't you say you had an hour and a half to prepare? The beggar asked, touching the sweat on his face.
John put away the map and compass and said, "Didn't you hear the guerrillas? They were driven out to patrol. There were reports of planes passing by. ”
I immediately thought of the complaining faces of the men, and I said, "Did they say they saw someone parachuting?" ”
John stood up and said, "No." But I guess we missed it. We need to hurry up to prevent any accidents. ”
"It doesn't look like those three people have received clear information." Little Bill said.
"Hmm. It's always good to be careful. John said and pointed in two directions: "See that hill bag?" Let's go there first. The village should be under that hill. ”
So we crossed the river and walked for about twenty minutes to the bottom of the hill.
"Let's go up and have a look. Confirm that it is safe. John climbed up first.
The mountain is neither high nor steep, but it is also overgrown with vegetation. Soon we climbed up. The whole appearance of the small village also appeared before our eyes. Just like the bird's-eye view John showed us earlier, there is a north-south road in the middle of the village. The road is lined with wooden houses and thatched houses.
"Why don't you have a person in such a good observation post?" Just as I was wondering, I saw movement in one of the grass below me.
I immediately made a silent gesture to everyone, and then pointed to the place where there was movement. John looked over there, turned back to me and little Bill, and motioned for the two of us to go to the right, and he and the beggar to go to the left. Stay in the middle of Walker for alert support.
Little Bill and I quickly touched it, and I saw a man and a woman sitting on the edge of the mountain bag behind the grass. The man was dressed in camouflage, and his gun was leaning against a tree. It turned out to be a sentry deserting.
When I was across from John, they were also in place, and John's voice rang in my headphones: "Gypsy." You control the man. Beggar you go and control that woman. Don't move too much, keep your mouth alive. ”
I pulled out the dagger, and the beggar and I crept towards the two of them, one left and one right. These two men were so focused on romance that he didn't react when I got behind the sentry. It wasn't until the beggar covered the woman's mouth and dragged her back that the sentry realized something was wrong. But I had covered his mouth with one hand and put a dagger against his neck with the other.
"Don't make a sound. Quiet, quiet. I whispered in his ear as I pulled him back.
The sentry tried to struggle, but my dagger used a little bit of force, and he quickly gave up when he saw that his girlfriend was under the control of the beggar.
We dragged him back and quickly tied up the little lovers. All were gagged and watched by the beggars. Others quickly inspected the mountain bag and returned there after finding no one else.
John looked at his watch, crouched down in front of the sentry, and said a few words in Spanish. The sentry nodded uneasily. I couldn't understand what they were saying, but it was clear that John was preparing to paraphrase him. Eventually, John pulled out a picture of our target for the sentry, but I saw that the sentry just shook his head.
After a brief exchange, John asked the beggar to shut the sentry's mouth again. He turned to us and said, "It's about the same as the information we had before. There are about twenty or so armed men in the village. Most of them are concentrated in the south and north of the village. Someone will come and change the guard with him in half an hour. Wait for the changing of the guard to come and subdue him. So we got to work. ”
"Don't wait for it to get dark?" I glanced at the sun, which had not yet fully set.
"Nope." John shook his head, "He mentioned that some official might come here in the evening to pick up some of the people who were being held here. We must act ahead of time lest the target be diverted. After saying that, he beckoned everyone to lean over.
