Chapter 16 Just write, whatever you want, self-taught

One of the guardians of the Demon Warrior - Dickens

Charles, John, Huffum, Dickens (1812-1870), the great British writers of the 19th century, is also a writer who is known for reflecting real life.

In his creative career of more than 30 years, he has written 15 novels, many short and medium stories, as well as essays, travelogues, current affairs reviews, plays, poems, etc., and has made outstanding contributions to English literature and world literature.

Dickens was born in Portsmouth, the second child of Elizabeth Barlow. Dickens's family moved to Chatham when he was 5 years old, and to Camden Town (present-day London) when he was 10 years old.

When his father, John Dickens, was imprisoned for debt, the family moved to a prison cell, and Dickens was sent to a London shoe shop as an apprentice, working 10 hours a day.

Perhaps it is because of this experience, the hardships, humiliations, and the warmth and coldness of human feelings, that Dickens's works pay more attention to the living conditions of the lower classes. In the novel David Copperfield, he describes his own encounter.

However, due to a legacy, the family's financial situation improved, and later he moved to the newspaper and became a reporter covering parliamentary debates. Dickens did not receive much formal education and was self-taught.

Dickens later became a congressional correspondent for The Morning Post. He specializes in policy debates in the House of Commons in the United Kingdom, and often travels around the UK to cover various election events.

He began to publish articles in various journals, which eventually collected and published as the Boz Notes, his first collection of essays.

But what really made him famous was the 1836 book The Pickwick Papers, which described the social problems of England in the city and countryside through a series of encounters between Pickwick and three friends on a trip, and at first did not attract much attention, selling only 500 copies in its first year.

In the spring of 1837, "The Pickwick Papers" became a topic of discussion in British society, and "Pickwick fever" appeared in society. The streets of British cities are home to a wide variety of Pickwick-related goods. Later, this book became a classic masterpiece of world literature.

Dickens went on to publish a number of popular novels, including Lonely Tears, Nicholas, Nick Bay, and The Old Curio Shop.

After completing Barnaby and Lachey in 1841, Dickens traveled to the United States, which he longed for. Although he was warmly welcomed there, Dickens eventually became disillusioned with the New World.

His observations in the United States were included in his 1842 book The American Chronicle.

In 1843 he published the novel "The Stingy God of Wealth", which caused great repercussions. This novel is the first in his series of Christmas stories.

He then used his trip to the United States as a backdrop. Published another novel, Martin, Zhai Shuwei.

Between 1844 and 1846, Dickens travelled around Europe. Continue to write during your trip. In 1849 he published an autobiographical novel, The Scrap of Meat, which had a lot to do with Dickens's personal experience.

Dickens's later novels were more acute and critical, including Bleak Hills, Hard Times, Little Durie, A Tale of Two Cities, and Great Expectations.

Year 1850. Dickens started his own weekly magazine, Homely Talk, which included novels by himself and other writers.

In 1859, another publication, The Four Seasons of the Year, was also published. Many of Dickens's own works were first published in serialized form in these two journals.

Dickens was not only a prolific writer, but also an active performer. He turned public readings into two-hour one-man theatre performances, and "promptbooks" (promptcopies) were his preparation notes.

- Frame the original, choose the essentials, omit the branches, and occasionally add a new joke - for this talented performer, the character expression marks are not needed.

Beginning in 1853, Dick's reading/acting sessions traveled on both sides of the Atlantic for more than a decade during his lifetime. The "Quick Book" is a stage direction written by Dickens for himself, which provides a vivid reference for Dickens's research and later derivative drama/film and television creation.

Dickens's life of hard work, heavy labor, and disappointment with the reality of reform seriously damaged his health. In 1870, Dickens died of a cerebral hemorrhage, and when he was dying, his first detective novel, The Mystery of Edwin and Druder, was not completed.

He was buried in Poets' Corner at Westminster Abbey after his death, and his tombstone reads: "He was a sympathizer for the poor, the suffering and the oppressed; 」

His works, such as The Scrap of Meat, Great Expectations, Tears of the Orphan, Nicholas Nicolas Nicolas and The Stingy Fortune Man, are considered to be some of Dickens's best works, especially the autobiographical novel The Scrap of Meat, which is considered by many to be Dickens's masterpieces.

Another work, Little Duli, is known for its biting satire. Most of Dickens's works are about his views and critiques of society. Charles Dickens was a fierce critic of class and poverty in Victorian England.

Dickens's love for theatre can be seen in his work Nicholas Nicolas Nicolas. He is also a successful actor himself, and he has traveled many times to perform in other countries.

Dickens's writing is flashy and poetic, but often humorous satirical of British high society.

Influence on Chinese Literature – Dickens's realist view of writing has attracted the attention of many literati in China, and Lao She has realized through reading Dickens's works that he does not need to care about the constraints of the Chinese novel: "Just write, whatever he wants", and more writers who were inspired by their exposure to British and American literature through Lin Wei's translations.
